as far as i can tell, what tech ceos really mean by metaverse is "we would like you to log back into second life but while wearing an annoying headset and your wallet hanging out. blockchain"
this shit is so stupid. the internet that already exists is orders of magnitude more advanced, functional, and blurrier in terms of boundaries between offline/online life than the original cyberpunk metaverse concept was for the most part, at least excluding cybernetic implants
that's not a criticism - books like neuromancer and snow crash were very prescient, but it's impossible to have predicted the full extent to which the web has transformed things. for one, it's way more omnipresent and annoying than anything in those books
