@Kate_Bunni @FachtnaOwen @chasestrangio I love how the trans cult think it's a gotcha moment when they say cis and trans are used in science...they don't mean what you think they mean.
Here's a quick lesson for you:
@Kate_Bunni @FachtnaOwen @chasestrangio In organic chemistry: cis refers to functional groups on the same side of the carbon chain while trans refers to functional groups o different sides of the carbon chain (not opposite of each other)
@Kate_Bunni @FachtnaOwen @chasestrangio In biology: cis refers to a non-coding part of the DNA which regulates genes within the same molecule at close quarters, while trans refers to that which regulates or modifies genes at a distance through interaction between two different molecules (not the opposite)
@Kate_Bunni @FachtnaOwen @chasestrangio In geography: the only example of CIS in geography is the acronym for Commonwealth of Independent States
@Kate_Bunni @FachtnaOwen @chasestrangio In maths: cis is a mathematical function of trigonometry related to Euler's formula
cis(x) = cos(x) + i sin(x)
There is no trans..it is not an opposite
@Kate_Bunni @FachtnaOwen @chasestrangio Maybe you all shouldn't have thrown out your dictionaries because they included definitions you find "problematic".
If you hadn't been so quick to dismiss actual definitions you may understand that the prefixes do not mean what you are arguing they mean.
@Kate_Bunni @FachtnaOwen @chasestrangio cis (prefix): from Latin meaning "on this side"
trans (prefix): from Latin meaning "across"
