Yesterday 22 Aug 2019, @Eskom_SA acting CEO Jabu Mabuza presented a document, apparently prepared by Boston Consulting Group, to the Eskom Executive Forum, a group of about 600 Eskom E & F band managers & executives, detailing the company's vision & strategy for the future.
@Eskom_SA The document presented by Eskom acting CEO Jabu Mabuza says that @Eskom_SA is in a utility death spiral with an outdated business model, with operational and structural inefficiencies, and a lack of transparency, in a rapidly changing in energy landscape.
@Eskom_SA The document presented by acting Eskom CEO Jabu Mabuza says that @Eskom_SA ran out of cash and came close to complete collapse on multiple occasions in 2019, and that if nothing is done, Eskom will collapse and bring down South Africa.
@Eskom_SA Eskom presents a turnaround plan based on: 1. Debt relief (govt support & debt restructuring) 2. Revenue management (price increases & better collection) 3. Cost initiatives (cost cutting) 4. Business separation (G, T & D) 5. Operational stability (improved EAF & supply security)
@Eskom_SA Eskom presents a 3-step restructuring plan with 5-year timeline: 1. Functional ring-fencing, into Gx, Tx & Dx units. 2. Legal separation of Gx, Tx & Dx units into subsidiary companies of Eskom Holdings. 3. Tx carved out of Eskom into a separate state-owned company (ISMO or ITSMO)
@Eskom_SA Acting @Eskom_SA CEO Jabu Mabuza calls on approx 600 Eskom E & F band managers & executives of the Executive Forum to provide & show: 1. Buy-in 2. Input 3. Commitment & leadership 4. Rigorous, disciplined execution 5. Tangible results 6. Clear & consistent messaging
@Eskom_SA From the vision & strategy document presented by Jabu Mabuza, it is clear Eskom sees itself in the future as an electricity generation & distribution company, and not a transmission company, which would be carved out of Eskom into an independent grid company (ISMO or ITSMO).
@Eskom_SA From the vision & strategy document presented by Jabu Mabuza, Eskom looks to future growth through: 1. Lower carbon energy mix 2. Renewables player 3. Electric vehicles & e-mobility 4. Energy storage 5. Micro and mini-grids 6. New electricity customers 7. Smart grids expansion

@Eskom_SA Following the presentation to the Eskom Executive Forum yesterday by acting Eskom CEO Jabu Mabuza, today Eskom met with organised labour unions @NUM_Media, @Numsa_Media & @solidariteit to "strengthen relations" and share Eskom's vision and turnaround strategy.
@Eskom_SA@NUM_Media@Numsa_Media@solidariteit Eskom says the meeting with organised labour today kick-starts discussions on Eskom’s vision and turnaround strategy for the future, and will be followed by discussions with other stakeholders.

I do think the prepayment electricity meter manufacturers, @Eskom_SA and municipal electricity distributors, as custodians of the Standard Transfer Specification (STS) protocol and the holders of the keys to electricity token vending software and token receiving software in the meters have a LOT to answer in the so called Key Revision Number rollover and the associated update to Key Revision Number 2 (KRN2).
So far, I have seen and heard no acknowledgement of their own role and liability for KRN2 fiasco, which is in my view a design flaw and software bug similar in principle to the year 2000 rollover problem that caused global anxiety and huge costs at the turn of the century.
The STS protocol software update to Key Revision Number 2 (KRN2) impacts some 6.9-million Eskom and 4.6-million municipal prepayment meters in South Africa that use the STS protocol. These meters need to have a software update to overcome a bug that would otherwise cause loss of electricity supply to customers with these meters.
*MONEYWEB: NERSA not willing to accept municipal tariff ruling*
Energy regulator NERSA announced on Sunday evening (30 June) that it will apply for leave to appeal the high court judgment delivered on 28 June compelling it to only approve municipal tariff applications based on cost-of-supply (CoS) studies, Moneyweb has learnt.
Successful appeal may lead to tariff increases, rather than the widely expected decreases. Source: Moneyweb
It is interesting to note that during the 4 days of excruciating @NERSA_ZA meetings (from 5 pm to 8.30 pm Monday to Thursday) last week to consider the price applications of all municipal electricity distributors, the full-time Nersa board member responsible for electricity regulation Mr Nhlanhla Gumede, voted against approval of virltally all the applications on the basis that the applications did not demonstrate the required linkage between the actual cost of supply by the electricity distributor and the electricity price increase applied for.
@NERSA_ZA However, Gumede was outvoted on virtually every occasion by the other non-electricity board members, Nomfundo Maseti, Adv Nomalanga Sithole, Muzi. Mkhize, and the applications were simply steam-rollered through.
These graphs indicate the very significant reduction in the burden on Eskom electricity generation (both energy and demand) for the first 20 weeks of 2024 (red line), compared to the same period in 2023 (blue line).
It should be noted that the Eskom residual energy and demand reflects the burden on the Eskom generation fleet after subtracting the contribution made by non-Eskom generation (i.e. renewable energy from IPPs, and self-generation behind the meter on customer premises).
I do not want to rain on Eskom's or NECOM's parade, or to detract from Eskom's admirable reduced unplanned breakdown performance. But one also needs to graciously give credit to other factors at play in the reduction of load shedding, where this is due.
I have just contacted the Eskom spokesperson by phone and received the following clear answers in respect of Eskom diesel supplies for the emergency diesel driven open cycle gas turbines at Gourikwa and Ankerlig:
Question: Has diesel for the Eskom OCGTs run out?
Answer: Yes, the diesel tanks have physically run out, and the diesel tanks for the Eskom OCGTs are empty.
Question: When will the diesel for the OCGTs will be replenished?
Answer: Not until 1 Apr 2023 at the earliest, or until someone provides Eskom with more money for procurement of diesel, noting the Eskom spend overrun on diesel to date is 2x budget for the current financial year.
For me, one of the things to come out from the 4th Zondo Commission report on @Eskom_SA yesterday is just how accurate the media investigations and reporting have turned out to be.
The Zondo Commission findings and recommentations in respect of Zuma, the Guptas, Myeni, Gigaba, Zwane, Brown, Ngubane, Tsotsi, Molefe, Singh, Koko, Maritz and more come as no surprise whatsoever. From the reporting, we have known the facts all along.
But the Zondo Commission certainly brought out officially some of the gory details of the blatent corruption:
1. Such as Gigaba and Molefe carting off bags of loot received at visits to the Gupta compound;

2/ "As nuclear professionals we should know when to stop & re-assess our actions in interests of both conventional & nuclear safety. In light of this, we have had to implement a work stop following a significant incident, which could have resulted in us losing the running unit.
3/ "While carrying out the required maintenance on Unit 2, an individual cut the valve of the Nuclear Sampling System’s 1 REN 168 VB on Unit 1, instead of the same valve on Unit 2.
