John McCain called Code Pink protestors "low-life scum" while threatening them with arrest for interrupting Henry Kissinger. When Cindy teased him about his hair in front of reporters on a campaign, he told her ""At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you cunt."
As late as the 2000s he'd double down on publicly calling the Vietnamese who held him captive "gooks" (which didn't stop him from brokering a deal to sell Vietnam arms). He opposed making MLK Day a holiday, only backing away under pressure years later. He chose a Birther as VP.
He called Mahmoud Ahmadinejad a "monkey," and doubled down by saying it was a joke, something people were being too "sensitive" about. In another "joke," McCain, a bomber pilot who had seen first hand what US munitions do to human bodies, sang a song about carpet bombing Iran.
But anyway it's very on brand for Joe Biden especially to embrace an ethos of generalized forgetting and hero-worship when it comes to older white politicos with track records of being ghoulish and whose primary pleasures are war, selling arms, and jailing people.
BC this thread is getting around, appending this, me in @thebafflermag. It's about a lot of things beyond just his bio: David Foster Wallace, war as part of US civic religion, the idea of sacrifice, more. I'm proud but saddened by how well it's held up. thebaffler.com/latest/the-mcc…

hard to imagine a more perfect combo of the Reaping / Sowing, Consequences of My Own Actions, and We're All Trying to Find the Guy Who Did This memes than an architect of austerity who's called for deliberately perpetuating unemployment now feigning distress over premature deaths A quote from a Slate article from 7/22 quoting Larry Summers
OTOH clearly this doesn't "transcend" politics, since my man has basically endorsed precarity-induced Deaths of Despair as sound policy. OTOH our elites generally view lubricating The Economy qua death machine as a prerequisite for and outside of political reckoning as such, so
real parallels with the pundits saying this data also doesn't implicate "healthcare" because it involves externalities in some way. tl dr administering this kind of necropolitical scheme sure takes some serious cognitive work!

neither here nor there but a number of people I've spoken to who are struggling with long COVID (including participating in clinical studies) have told me that doctors have variously prescribed and/or offered stimulants to them and others, stimulants which are now in shortage
to be clear I can't speak to the pharmacology, the supply chain logistics, or any of that, but what strikes me most here is how people facing very real problems with cognitive symptoms, chronic fatigue, etc have to get back to work one way or another and so this feels inevitable
without in any way judging the (often forced) choices of individuals (it's not my ministry) it does seem like a classic and distinctively american response to crises that would otherwise be unsustainable is just to throw yet more crises at them as a solution and just keep going

if you'd like to witness something truly deranged I would encourage you to check out the frequency with which Elon Musk replies to an unaffiliated twitter blue account called "musk university" that just quotes him twitter.com/search?q=from%…
compared to this level of alumni engagement bari weiss and truth university of austin don't stand a chance

weird how a guy who positions himself as a champion of free speech and open disagreement yet is paranoid about people around him being bots, ghost job holders, etc would also frame as an existential enemy an abstract, contagious cognitive pathogen infecting the minds of others
its probably fine though, its not like this belies a basic inability to conceptualize the existence of other human beings, a refusal to reckon with the ideas and speech he supposedly values, or has any historical precedent in ideologies that dehumanize/verminize abjected others
"it's not fascism because I didn't say they were literally bugs - they're just people whose minds have been warped by buggy software and who need to be defragged or otherwise eliminated in order to, uh, secure a future for AI and/or, uh, yeah, children, definitely them too"

ICYMI here's my long-read deep-dive high-low extravaganza on Elon Musk's Boss Baby solipsism, Jeff Bezos' fixation on where and when his peons poop, and why billionaires are fine with shitting the bed that is the earth as long as they can flee to the stars apocalypsevibecheck.substack.com/p/the-anality-…
"A James Bond-inspired birthday bash for billionaire Robert F Smith reportedly left guests rattled due to intense security measures at his Florida mansion—including the bizarre decision to close off all of the building's 15 bathrooms to guests in favor of outdoor port-a-potties."

the richest yet emptiest man in the world stealing abject grief for clout, and to use as a weapon
to think that such a person would have a moment's pause - let alone shed a tear - to think of the existence of or any harm that might come to a stranger, or someone he finds distasteful, or even someone who gave him $8, let alone that he might be humanity's future, I can't
