I have a folder with emails and screen grabs called "hate mail." It dates back to 2009. It has 3,912 files. 2/

"Redbull" told me to get a lobotomy because I suffer from "muttering gibberish, drooling, fits of anger, dementia, pissing my pants." At least he was creative. 3/

"Sag" wrote "You are the devil. Fake hateful white trash. America, HATES YOU!" The devil theme is common in these messages. 4/

John Holst used another common refrain--dumb blonde jokes: "You made the transition from 'hot babe' to 'dumb blonde' in one sentence." 5/

Harry Gellock's email to my department said, " You got where you are because you have a hole between your legs, you didn't earn it." 6/

C. Penrod wrote "Thank God, I'm not paying for you to educate my children...The Obama Administration is the most communistic, corrupt and criminal Administration in the history of the U.S. They should be hung for treason. I'd be thrilled to provide the ropes." 7/

Carter Kolodny got right to the point: "You are one stupid cunt." (Cunt is by far the most popular sexist slur I've encountered as a woman with a public voice.) 8/

Nick Barkley called me a "steaming gash." 9/

Billy Dalton threatened a visit: "You phony, liberal ass kissing bitch...Can't wait to see you, you phony, racist piece of slime." 10/

"Merc" wrote to multiple faculty at my college: "FUCK YOU CUNT. You are a pedophile on the human condition. YOU NASTY FILTHY HATE FILLED FILTHY BICH WHY DON’T YOU GO BURY YOUR FACE IN SOME FAT DYKES ASS LIKE ROSIE O’DONNELL." 12/

Robert Johnson made threats: "You need to worry about more important things than whether voters need AN I'D! CAN YOU SLEEP WITH ONE EYE OPEN? YOU KNOW THOSE WACKY TEA PARTY PEOPLE MIGHT BURN YOUR HOUSE DOWN WHEN YOU GO TO SLEEP...HAVE A GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP!" 13/

Winter Raynes wrote, "Just remember Hitler started with death panels and before the end of his reign he'd not only PUT THE JEWS TO SLEEP he'd seen to it that many of the college educated PhD's were knocked off to so good luck lady." 14/

R. J. also made threats: "The question is how do you want to die? Sooner or Later? You bonehead turd! Time to thin the herd is your message and I agree. You are wasting good air." 15/

Jerry McDowell also made threats: "You are one ugly and dumb frigging political slut and whore...You make the best case I have ever seen why most women should not be allowed to vote...You do not need to be in the gene pool." 16/

"Don't Ask" suggested I kill myself: "Will you please do us all a favor and cut your own wrists until you bleed to death? Don't forget to lock the door so no one can save you from your own fate- death by stupidity." 17/

This is just a fraction of the hate I've received -- via social media, phone calls to me, phone calls to my colleagues and bosses, emails to me, emails to colleagues and bosses, messages to family members, in person at events, in airports and on planes when I travel... 18/

I've reported credible death threats to authorities. I have a panic button in my office. My campus voicemail fills with vitriolic messages from strangers. I have to worry about my safety at public events 100% of the time.

"Bedbugs"? Spare me.
