I know a lot of people who have stopped eating meat for ethical reasons, but not many have thought about the ethics of eating sugar. Time to re-think #sugar
Sugar is also bad for your health, which we've known for awhile now. Sugar Blues (published 1975): openlibrary.org/works/OL162798…
And, sugar is addictive: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…
It's also IN a lot of things you might not suspect. hopkinsmedicine.org/health/wellnes…
The US Gov't makes sure that sugar is a mainstay of the American diet through subsidies, BIG ONES: nationalreview.com/2018/05/sugar-…
There's also persuasive evidence that #SUGAR is what is fueling the rise in obesity. See for example, The Case Against Sugar, by Gary Taubes: penguinrandomhouse.com/books/213737/t…
Which is related to Type2 Diabetes, a condition that those among the Pima and Tohono O’odham tribes are at higher risk for, due to dietary changes (+ increased #SUGAR) wrought by colonization. See, for example: pbs.org/unnaturalcause…
I tend to see #SUGAR as a kind of insidious, ongoing form of colonization, one that makes us think we like it going down but is, ultimately, corrosive and deadly.
So, if you're into thinking about ethics + health, you might want to give some thought to that #SUGAR you're eating.
