FARC "leadership" announces a return to arms against the Colombian state after it failed to meet its end of the deal made in the Havana peace treaty. Meanwhile, a majority of former FARC, including the former leader, still support the treaty. #Colombia
Initial intelligence reports indicate that the video in which FARC rebel "leaders" announced they're launching a new war was allegedly recorded in Venezuela. However, these reports have not provided evidence backing this claim as of yet. #Colombia elpais.com/internacional/…
FARC is an acronym for Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia) and was founded in 1964. Its goals are to represent #Colombia's rural poor by seizing power through armed revolution, and establishing a government free of oligarchy.
FARC is a self-proclaimed Marxist-Leninist organization however in the 80s - 90s it became very intertwined with organized crime and began funding the guerilla through drug and human trafficking. It must be noted, the Colombian state was also really into organized crime as well.
FARC was created as a defense force during a period of conflict in Colombia & after many years of severe violence by the State which was backed by foreign interests (of the red, white & blue persuasion) and corporations attempting to steal the land and wealth of rural Colombians.
While the State was more interested in protecting large landowners, foreign interests and corporations it abused and killed many Colombians who grew increasingly frustrated in the 70s, which helped FARC gain the recruitment of thousands of peasants, students, and intellectuals.
In the 1990's the war between FARC and the State introduced a third group in the form of right-wing paramilitary militias (extrajudicial Statists) that controlled much of the cocaine trafficking and carried out executions, disappearances, and murders of FARC and other opposition.
While FARC is guilty of terrorist acts, assassinations, and criminal activity, the State in Colombia and it's former right-wing paramilitary groups have committed atrocities and crimes at a larger scale across rural areas, which have been mostly covered up or ignored.
Currently, Colombia is divided between people who suffered under FARC and those who suffered under the State, each with valid reasons to distrust and be angry at the other. Which certain elements of the State have been exploiting to undermine the Havana peace treaty.
While these FARC "leaders" declare war again, it comes on the tail of the upcoming elections in which will only benefit Ivan Duque y Alvaro Uribe, top right-wing and US-backed, politicians in Colombia who have been attempting to restart the war since the peace treaty was signed.
The Havana peace treaty is still valid & supported by the majority of former FARC members, leadership, and Colombian's who suffered under both the guerrilla and the State. We just wanted to put this thread out before U.S. media and Trump go into its "FARC = Terrorism" news cycle.
