This week’s hearings have clearly proven to me that antivaxxers have a powerful lobby.

You know who doesn’t have a lobby?

The 8 yr old kid on chemotherapy.

The family of a 4 month old who’s too young for his MMR vaccine.

The uncle who just received an organ transplant. 1/
The mother taking immunosuppressive drugs for her Crohn’s.

The brother with an immune deficiency disorder.

The sister with AIDS.

The granddaughter who can’t medically be vaccinated.

2/
And lastly, the unvaccinated child who had his immunity wiped out by a measles infection. newscientist.com/article/dn2748…

They are our family, friends, neighbors and coworkers.

They deserve protection too.

A friendly reminder:

Anyone who tells you that ‘they had the flu and it wasn’t that bad’ 100% did not have the flu to begin with.

(or was vaccinated and had milder symptoms because of it)

Most people will remember the EXACT week(s) they had their last bout with the flu.
Mine was my first year of family medicine residency.

I still remember the ER doc taking one look at me dragging myself in that night and saying:

“You look worse than every single patient here. Go home.”

I obliged & took nearly a week to recuperate.
My wife had to be kept overnight for dehydration/lethargy due to influenza as she wasn’t keeping up with hydration between bouts of sleeping and being deliriously feverish.

I had never been so scared for her until that day.

This’ll be a short thread so bare with me.

The consequences of our dwindling herd immunity have finally hit close to home.

Yesterday, my pregnant wife, who was fully vaccinated against measles, was told she’s unfortunately not immune.

1/
She was told by the nurse at the end of the call: “By the way, don’t plan any travel to Saint John”

Saint John is home to her.

It’s where her whole family is.

It was understandably a hard pill to swallow.

2/
On top of this, we have been planning a trip with friends to NYC later in this June.

Now everyone is scrambling, checking vaccination records, calling public health, etc.

Pharmacies have “no available vaccines”, all have been rerouted for the outbreak.
