Given the discovery that many women are having their replies deboosted here, I wanted to know who else twitter wishes to suppress the speech of, for the greater good.
It does, for example, also suppress the speech of trans people who support women’s right to be heard in the ongoing debate about how laws and narratives around gender affect them, like @FionneOrlander, @GC_Ladyboi and @iamtranssexual
So far I’ve discovered that it is does not choose to suppress the speech of someone who hopes cis people will “die in a grease fire” like Rachel McKinnon, though. Nor someone convicted of a sex offence like Bill Cosby.
It does not suppress the speech of an alleged serial predator, like Jessica Yaniv, nor white supremacists like former grand wizard David Duke and that cad Richard Spencer.
It does not suppress the speech of controversial public figures such as Ben Shapiro, Jordan Peterson & Stefan Molyneux. Nor politicians such as Nigel Farage.
It does not suppress the speech of organisations that are against women’s reproductive rights such as Heartbeat International, SPUC & American Life League.
It does not suppress the speech of someone who is on record laughing about executing gay people, like Florida rep Mike Hill. Nor that of someone who stole one woman’s name to harass her and tried to assault another like TownTattle.
It turns out that it doesn’t suppress the speech of those who allegedly beat up women like Chris Brown, nor someone who brutally assaulted their female employee like Emile Hirsch.
Neither does it suppress the speech of people who have denied the holocaust happened like Luis D’Elia.
I think this is noteworthy. Firstly, if an account is considered harmful&abusive, why is twitter not simply banning the users? If users are alleged to be potentially harmful, as we see with the deboosting of women, then this is Minority Report territory.
Their visibility is being reduced on the premise they may cross a line, not because Twitter is saying they have done so. In addition to that, it is being done secretly, seemingly with a specific criteria that allows white supremacists etc a platform, but not ordinary women.
This suggests quite the agenda. Twitter is showing both its ability and its willingness to manipulate an ongoing conversation by targeting a group of people with a specific set of concerns or opinions.
This has ramifications far beyond this discussion, for the people uninvolved in it, as well as on both sides of it, who may find themselves on the side of another issue that Twitter disapproves of, without having sufficient cause to flex its banhammer.
We should all be worried about this. When platforms influence what information we can have access to, &who we are most able to hear speak amongst their guideline abiding users, without telling us, they are meddling
They are wilfully attempting to influence our collective opinions&interfering with the ability of some of us to fully participate even as they willingly extend that ability to others. They are behaving not like platforms, but like individual people with all the bias that entails.
That, I think, is genuinely harmful.

Maybe twitter ought to deboost itself.
Receipts in no particular order:
On posting this, after about a minute, my account was temporarily locked and I had to verify I wasn’t a robot and enter a code to get back in.
