Today’s #EMS call involved teaching a desperate father how to administer #Narcan to his adult son, to whom we had to give 3 doses to bring out of overdose. I taught him about the short half life of #Naloxone and that even if he successfully awoke him from OD he was to /1
always call 911 as he can never be sure how much #opiate was in his system or how long the Narcan would last. Seeing the defeat in this man’s eyes as he watched his dreams for the child he held as a baby vanish as while accepted the reality of fighting /2
to just keep his son alive broke me for the day.

Many are so quick to blow sick people like him off as just another junkie, a burden on society, roll their eyes at just a drug addict.

But today as I placed my BVM over his nose and mouth and ventilated him, I saw /3
just how human this young man is.

He is someone’s son. Someone loves him. Someone wept and begged us to help him today. Someone thanked us for helping save his child, though the son sat and denied having a drug problem at all.

It won’t be the last time I Narcan this /4
young man. It won’t be the last time my tones go out and his address is announced over my radio. It won’t be the last time I run up the 3 flights of stairs with my equipment, praying I get there in time.

But we did get there in time today, and that’s the best I can hope for most days. It’s also the reason I carry Narcan in my personal vehicle, why my kids are trained on how to use it, why I advocate for harm reduction.

Because everyone is someone’s kid.
