The average person wastes up to 30 gallons of water every day. In a world where so much of the population lack access to safe water, it's shameful that we still waste so much water. And let's admit it – we've all had a role to play. #SaveFlintChallenge #FlintWaterCrisis
The Flint water crisis began in April 2014 when Flint changed its water source from Detroit Water (sourced from Lake Huron and the Detroit River) to the Flint River. Officials failed to apply corrosion inhibitors to the water. People died, thousands poisoned. #FlintWaterCrisis
Before 2010, Flint got its water from downstate. The placement of a sketchy emergency manager to run the city, was a fatal move. He favored Flint getting its water from the Flint River. #FlintWaterCrisis
Michigan voters repealed the emergency manager law in 2012, but gerrymandering in 2011, helped Snyder retain control of the MI legislature and he simply re-enacted the emergency manager law with his personal changes. #FlintWaterCrisis
Flint residents protested, showed up at meetings, made sure their voice was heard. However, the Emergency Manager wasn't accountable to them. Local democracy was suspended & local officials weren't calling the shots. The EM was in power & accountable only to Snyder.
Flint is the poster child for a much bigger water issue in America. The municipalities seem too concerned with saving money and moving money into other politically popular causes rather than focusing on a technology that could help avert a coming water crisis. #FlintWaterCrisis
Flint then switches its water source to the Flint River - but it turns out Flint River water has a higher salt content which corrodes Flint’s aging pipes, releasing lead and other chemicals.

During my recent trip to Flint I confirmed all pipes are not replaced. #FlintWaterCrisis
The Flint water crisis was born out of Snyder's greed, & flawed policies. It continued with his disregard for a poor city, consisting of mostly black people.

Meet Ken. He hadn't consumed Flint tap water in 10 years, and had words for Snyder last year.
Thousands & thousands of people in Flint were poisoned, while the Snyder admin focused on obscuring facts, waging a PR campaign against residents that were speaking out, and showing blatant disregard for a community suffering through a problem he caused. #FlintWaterCrisis
When Flint residents complained that their tap water smelled bad and made children sick, they were ignored for months.

Showering was connected with skin rashes and hair loss. The water was poison. A sip of it put the taste of a metal coin on your tongue #FlintWaterCrisis
Former Gov. Rick Snyder was added into a class action lawsuit brought on by Flint residents in the wake of the water crisis.

Judge Levy took him out of the case, but lead plaintiff attorney, Michael Pitt, explained they brought her new evidence. #FlintWaterCrisis
Flint emergency managers were charged. @RosarioDawson even helped #AmericaDivided tell Flint's story to seek justice.

"I'm in shock at how democracy was completely thrown out the window." @rosariodawson #FlintWaterCrisis

The following is a compressed timeline, detailing key moments in the water crisis. #FlintWaterCrisis
The residents of Flint were forced to drink water that was rusting car parts. #FlintWaterCrisis
Lead-contaminated water in Flint was linked to lower fertility rates and higher fetal death rates in the city. #FlintWaterCrisis
Flint residents suffered the third largest outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in U.S. history, with at least 90 people infected and 13 dead. #FlintWaterCrisis
Due to lack of government action, Flint is still relying on charitable organizations & private money to solve public problems. #FlintWaterCrisis
A few other Flint Water Crisis timeline moments to remember. #FlintWaterCrisis
For months, state health officials told Flint residents that it was safe to bathe in the city’s water and denied the Flint river rashes.

During my research I discovered babies being bathed with bottled water, and outbreaks of rashes due to tap water.
The Hurley Medical Center, in Flint, released a study confirming what many Flint parents had feared: The proportion of infants and children with above-average levels of lead in their blood nearly doubled since the city switched to using the Flint River as its water source.
The government failed Flint’s residents for decades. Implicit bias and systemic "racism" ingrained in housing, education, infrastructure, and emergency management all perpetuated discrimination and eventually led to the Flint Water Crisis. #FlintWaterCrisis
Gov. Snyder’s administration announced April 6 2018, it was ending the free water program after testing showed Flint's water quality was below federal action levels for lead for two years.

But keep in mind, this was ended before all pipes were replaced.
Meet Barry. Great man who takes care of his nieces and said kids & the elderly are struggling the most. #FlintWaterCrisis
How much will be invested into people living in Flint experiencing mental health issues caused by the water crisis. We found out people still come into Flint hospitals for nervous breakdowns due to the city’s water contamination crisis. #FlintWaterCrisis
February 2019, one of the most recent deaths caused by the Flint Water Crisis occurred. Jassmine McBride, died 6 months after her 30th birthday from Legionnaires caused by the water.

Jassmine Mcbride's government killed her with water. #FlintWaterCrisis
In March 2019, CNN released a toxic article that downplayed the Flint water crisis, and failed to focus on addressing a plan to repair the trust between Flint residents and politicians. I've spoken to hundreds of Flint residents who feel that particular damage is irreparable.
In July 2018 @SpeakerPelosi toured a Flint neighborhood where lead pipes were being replaced. That visit only proved to be a photo-op and more empty promises for Flint.

Everyone meet Andre. Cool guy. Another Flint resident who feels forgotten. @TeamPelosi #FlintWaterCrisis
.@TeamPelosi When you emailed us at the start of our campaign to help Flint, you assured me we'd see results and action on behalf of @SpeakerPelosi. Flint residents feel forgotten, and water distribution programs are closing due to lack of funding. What's your plan?
The city of Flint dumped an estimated 2 million gallons of untreated sewage into the Flint River Sunday, Aug. 18 2019, just months after officials warned wastewater infrastructure was fast approaching a “critical point.” #FlintWaterCrisis
The Flint water crisis is an environmental scandal. One of the most downplayed and disgusting examples of community malpractice currently going on in the United States. #FlintWaterCrisis #AmericaHasAWaterCrisis
International students provide an economic boost in Flint, a city saddled with double-digit unemployment. The international student in Flint spends on average almost $30k a year to cover tuition, fees and living expenses.

In 2019, they're also losing their hair due to the water.
Prosecutors stunned the city of Flint, when they dropped all pending charges against officials accused of ruining the community’s drinking water and ignoring signs of a crisis—casting doubt on what some residents had seen as a small step toward justice.
It's been five years since the city's water crisis began.

Now, even after officials have said the situation is vastly improved, Flint residents' trust in their water, and in their government—is badly corroded. #FlintWaterCrisis
Water in Flint won't be safe until "all" of the corroded lead pipes have been replaced and the medical community signs off on it. Until that happens, people are still lining up to get water wherever they can.

Some drive. others walk. some even ride bicycles. #FlintWaterCrisis
The government is performing horribly in correcting Flint. Our media is failing Flint, with no coverage of a crisis that never ended. Resources depleting, and we still haven't heard a solid plan on how trust between residents & politicians will be restored. #FlintWaterCrisis
Everyone meet Walter. Born in Flint's West-end. Honest guy, who feels the government owes. Walter is right, this wasn't supposed to happen to him. In 2019, Flint residents can't even make coffee with tap water.

Imagine having to wash your body in bottles of water for five years.
Research revealed, it takes 100 bottles of water for some Flint families to make Thanksgiving dinner. One family needed 24 bottles just to thaw the turkey.

It takes 1 adult an average of 14 bottles of water to wash comfortably. Most families only get 3 cases of free water.
Meet Mr. Harvey. Hard working father taking care of his kids. He doesn't want to be in Flint anymore. When I asked him if he was leaving, he said "It's not that easy." Flint is a poor city, that deserves clean water & revitalization. #FlintWaterCrisis
The millions allocated to Flint so far, were helpful "long overdue" funds indeed. But everyone ignores the extreme amounts required for treatment. The cost of lead poisoning in Flint alone was estimated at $458 Million.

It's downplayed to make you think there isn't a crisis.
March 1, Jaden Smith announced his company Just Water is bringing a mobile filtration system called “The Water Box” to remove lead and other poisons from the water in Flint.

His water box didn't help this resident, anyone we spoke with, or anyone they knew. #FlintWaterCrisis
So much needs to be done in Flint, yet somehow they continue to smile.

In 2019, even the Flint kids know their water crisis isn't over. Lead exposure to children “can cause learning disabilities, and at very high levels, seizures, coma, & even death.” #FlintWaterCrisis
Even if lead was removed in 2016, the effects of lead on a child’s brain wouldn’t have vanished. The very lowest levels of lead exposure, erodes a child’s IQ, shortens attention span, and disrupts their behavior. #FlintWaterCrisis
August 27, 2019. The children exposed to high levels of lead-laced drinking water from Michigan's Flint River are entering schools now and the school system is straining to meet their special education needs. #FlintWaterCrisis edwk.it/2PiqNdZ
While presidential candidates use Flint for talking points, and FRONTLINE paddles through “Flint’s Deadly Water” airing September 10th on @PBS—bottled water remains in high demand, and suspicion abounds about the city’s decaying water infrastructure.
The government poisoned Flint residents and killed people. Then stopped giving away free bottled water because it was costing them $22k a day. Five years later, they're still suffering. Each day nothing is done to help Flint, complicates their recovery.
Take a trip to Flint, Michigan. witness the long lines of cars wrapped around the block. the poverty. listen to the people. cry with the people. help the people.

I promise you'll look at life, water, our government and tweets different. #SaveFlintChallenge #FlintWaterCrisis
Just because the Flint water crisis isn't trending, doesn't mean it's over. #SaveFlintChallenge #FlintWaterCrisis
Flint misses ‘self-imposed’ deadline for replacing lead service lines. #SaveFlintChallenge #FlintWaterCrisis bit.ly/2zRckee
.@JordanChariton has been powerful on the ground in Flint covering the crisis. #FlintWaterCrisis #AmericaHasAWaterCrisis
"The fight against lead in water is a fight for our kids." Powerful words Doc. Everyone meet @MonaHannaA, an important piece to Flint's story. Her research actually exposed the Flint water crisis. #FlintWaterCrisis

Example: Newark, NJ. She's another story, with different villains & victims. The water crisis in Newark is very similar to Flint's. In both cases the government wasn't telling people the truth. #FlintWaterCrisis #NewarkWaterCrisis #AmericaHasAWaterCrisis theguardian.com/us-news/2019/a…
Presidents aren't perfect, but they are influential. Barack Obama's pledge to Flint in 2016, saying "I've got your back" while drinking a glass of Flint water, was one of the most damaging moments for Flint residents. The water was still bad.
They say every storm, produces a rainbow somewhere. And it was Flint's storm that made a little girl named Mari Copeny pickup her sign to protest. Months turned into years, and @LittleMissFlint went on to become the glue that held Flint's story together.
The Flint water saga is nearing the Michigan statute of limitations for prosecuting public officials for malfeasance. In response, two state legislators from Flint have introduced bills to extend the statute from 6 to 10 years. Read more: kpvi.com/news/national_… #FlintWaterCrisis
