Both parities are putting into motion bills on "domestic terrorism" that would ultimately help define participants in mass social movements as "terrorists" - essentially generalizing the post-9/11 attack on the Muslim community on the entire population. justsecurity.org/65998/domestic…
As @just_security points out, the issue isn't one of lack of laws, which like the Patriot Act, give the FBI, DHS, and JTTF agents massive leeway, but instead that fundamentally the State is more interested in policing social movements than far-Right groups.
@just_security "The proposed laws also would dangerously broaden the definition of terrorism. The intent requirement – “seeking to intimidate or coerce civilian populations” – can easily be twisted to cover protestors or activists, especially when it comes to property damage."
@just_security "a new domestic terrorism statute will undoubtedly magnify the impact of existing enforcement disparities...While Congress may be thinking about targeting white supremacists, the FBI’s enforcement priorities will drive who actually gets investigated and prosecuted."
@just_security As the @BrennanCenter pointed out: "Data...supplemented with research...shows that far-right violence, is severely under-addressed as a matter of Justice Department policy and practice, rather than a lack of statutory authority." brennancenter.org/publication/wr…
@just_security @BrennanCenter Leaked documents show that again and again, it's not lack of laws that prevent the security State from failing to go after the far-Right, it's simply just not a priority when compared to social movements challenging capital and the State. newsweek.com/fbi-leak-black…
@just_security @BrennanCenter This is also exemplified by the fact that recently the DOJ was caught attempting to suppress reports on the growing threat of far-Right and white nationalist violence. salon.com/2019/08/09/tru…
