The SHRUG (our high-res dataset of 500,000 villages, 8000 towns, and 4000 legislative constituencies) is now open to the public! (with @thesamasher @tobylunt and @ryu_matsuura) devdatalab.org/shrug 1/N
This is more than just a cool dataset. We’re trying to create an open platform where India researchers have incentives to share data that is helpful to others. 2/N
We created town, village, and constituency identifiers (called shrids) that are super easy to link to other datasets. If you use these identifiers, you get immediate access to hundreds of data fields through SHRUG. 3/N
When researchers post their own data using SHRUG identifiers, they make it easy for others to use their data and cite their work. 4/N
If you put together a data source that is general use and covers all of India, we may include it in the next SHRUG release (with your permission!). This will raise the profile of your work and generate citations to it. 5/N
The current version of SHRUG already includes election results (assembled by Jensenius and Villiers 2017) and criminal charges against assembly candidates (assembled by Prakash, Rockmore and Uppal 2019). 6/N
We hope others will contribute as well. We think that it is a win-win. Together we build a high quality data source for research on India, and contributing researchers get cited for their contributions. 7/N
We optimistically created a subreddit for errata, feedback, questions, suggestions, or discussion of analysis using SHRUG: reddit.com/r/ShrugIndia/ 8/N
We’re trying to turn this into the world’s most clean and useful India data platform. Help us out, or just use the data and do great research! 9/N
Right now the SHRUG platform is geared towards researchers, but we’re working hard to make it as useful to policymakers, civil society organizations, the media, and anyone else trying to use data to improve people’s lives. 10/10
