Ways that #autistic people can be harmed by the lack of #autism knowledge and acceptance out there - a thread that I want to have an impact. /1
1. Arrested or cautioned for not cooperating with the police, during a meltdown or just from misunderstanding. #autism /2
2. Being shamed, bullied or even assaulted for behaviour that does not conform to the narrow band of behaviours permitted by neurotypical society. #autism /3
3. Being refused a job due to underperformance in a job interview where interpersonal skill was a silent assessment point. #autism /4
4. Having repeated heart attacks as doctors won't take your complaints seriously. These heart attacks lead to complete destruction of your heart muscle. This has happened. #autism /5
5. Losing your job for repeated sickness where your requests for reasonable adjustments are ignored. #autism /6
6. Being trained at a young age to ignore your natural emotions in order to make you fit into neurotypical life, leading to trauma in adulthood. #autism /7
7. Being made to feel that children would be better off dead than have the same condition as you. #autism /8
8. Not having needs met as it is assumed you are not able enough to assess your own requirements. #autism /9
9. Being told you can't possibly be #autistic due to your ability/looks/dress/hair/voice and then doubting yourself, causing confusion. /10
10. Never seeing any positive realistic #autistic role models in the media or in fiction, meaning your self image is inexorably glued to tired stereotypes. /11
11. Being so exhausted by failed communication that you cut yourself off from all contact with people. Nobody notices. #autism /12
12. Being so exhausted by masking all the time to fit in with society that you burnout, and possibly collapse into depression. #autism /13
13. Being so exhausted by all of these things that the only escape appears to be suicide. We are NINE TIMES more likely to take our own lives. #autism /14
14. Being taken advantage of by people who benefit from our need to fit in with the world, who betray our trust in so many various and darkly ingenious ways that we struggle to trust anyone again. #autism /15
15. Being emotionally and physically abused by people who have spied our weakness and proceed to use it against us, especially #autistic girls and women manipulated by men. #autism /16
16. Being mistreated by the very organisations and charities set up to help us, to the point of causing PTSD in #autistic individuals. #autism /17
17. Being bullied by employers who take advantage of our #autism and any weakness involved. /18
18. Being ignored and not platformed by organisations and charities that should be actively encouraging us to speak. #autism /19
19. Being told our attempt to find some positivity in a stressful world, and unite under an inclusive banner, somehow excludes those of us worse affected by #autism, which is gaslighting /20
20. Being told that #Neurodiversity is, in fact, an elitist movement that silences autistic people, by people with deeply dubious agendas who are then platformed by a major newspaper. #autism /21
This thread has made me furious! Just writing out the list of injustices and hardships, and I've barely even scratched thd surface, is making me livid.
21. Having minority voices in the black #autistic community, female autistic people, gender fluid autistic people treated as even *more* 'other' and having their injustices doubled. /22
22. Having school children who are simply different be bullied by their peers, lash out in anger and then GET PUNISHED FOR THIS. #autism /23
23. Having your very existence ignored by your prime minister because he doesn't realise that #autism *doesn't* disappear at 18. /24
24. Getting constant headaches and migraines from the stress of existing in a hostile world. #autism /25
25. Losing your right to an education because you're permanently excluded for behaviours directly related to #autism that your school did not make adjustments for. /26
