Using hashtags and trending words - How not to make a hash of it on twitter - a thread.

#Stopbrexit #Stopthecoup #FBPE #FinalSay #PeoplesVote

Sadly I see too many people saying that they don't see the point of #hashtag ging - or that it is silly - or doesn't help....

So bear with me here...

#StopBrexit #StopTheCoup #LiarJohnson #DeathByBrexit

This couldn't be further from the truth, using tags well, in any situation on twitter, helps you reach further and link up with other people

Even people in other countries

#FBPE #HaveDemocracy #StopFascism #facciamorete #FBR

This has been proved in the last week by the time and effort taken by the "Commings" camp to put out fake tags such as stop/the/coup e

They used over 1000 bot accounts to trend that - and to mess up #stopTheCoup Why would they, if trending tags didn't matter?
So why are hashtags different from ordinary words or phrases - and why does it matter?

Hashtags provide a metalink - so if you click on #FBPE - you will see all the posts that have used it recently. 5/n

#Caturday #MondayMotivation #ThursdayThoughts #GBBO #BBCQT
You can easily order these by most popular, or latest post 6/n
Twitter use the frequency and incidence of the use of tags to decide what is trending, and they inform you of this in a panel next to your timeline.

This is not a straight head-count

The best way to think of it is that they start from ground level, not sea level

If a group of 50 people are using that tag every day, then only increase over & above that will count towards trending.

Twitter is interested in News - not sameness.

So ONLY new people using a phrase or tag are counted

#stopbrexit #FBPE #PutABananaInAFilmTitle

This tells other users, in your bubble and in others, what everyone is currently talking about.

Your "bubble" is your interest group.

It is good to communicate with it.👍

It is good to communicate outside it too.... 👍

#Stopbrexit #VoteLeaveLied #VoteLeaveBrokeTheLaw

Curiosity will often make people click on tags - to see what the story is, and that means they are engaging with our cause (if it is our tag)

This happens more with trending tags that are listed on the screen.

#facciamorete #FBR #StopTheCoup #LiarJohnson #NotMyPM

So how do we know if it is our tag - & does it matter?

Yes it does, bc there could be a lot of bot activity out there that is not good to spread, so yeah - check...

You can do this by searching on the tag - clicking on "latest" then scrolling back to look

#DeadCat #Bot
Types of tags - a few notes about these. There are basically 5 sorts of tags:
1) Ephemeral tags that arise out of the moment, or are created for an event or twitterstorm

2) Long-term tags that identify groups or campaigns.
3) Tags belonging to the "other side"
4) Daily tags or other trending items or tags.
5) Tags belonging to other bubbles or events.
Group 1)
With hashtags - less is more - having a few regular tags that we all use - helps keep the message *together* and make it more likely we will trend on a #remain agenda.
#StopBrexit #stopthecoup #FBPE #FinalSayForAll #PeoplesVote #RevokeA50 #LiarJohnson

These are unlikely to trend (see post #7) - but they are the glue that holds us together.

So - for the long term tags - what are the basics?

a) Capitalisation doesn't matter - it makes the tag easier to read - but #stopbrexit is the same tag as #StopBrexit

Adding bits on does matter though

~StopBrexitSaveBritain is NOT the same tag as #stopbrexit and will not count in with it in trending data

The same applies for a plural - or "er" #remains & #Remainer is not counted with #remain. Leave a gap #Remain s #Remain er

Likewise ~Option2Remain is not the same as #OptionToRemain

Needless to say doing this (making 2 for no reason) helps no one. Please try really hard not to do this.

Other general points. Short tags are good - it is lucky that twitter had doubled the letter count before the #BreconAndRadnorshireByElection - bc frankly that tag is far far too long. Back in the day, it would have been the whole tweet..... 🥴18/n
Meaningful tags are good - though we have #ABTV and #FBPE - which everyone has to *ASK* about - bc their meaning is not evident.

Tags that fit flexibly into sentences are good too eg #CantHaveBoth

BTW cannot punctuate in the middle of tags - #Can'tHaveBoth doesn't work

2) Short-term (disposable) tags FOR twitter storms/ current events

see tweet #7 - this means that it is much easier to trend a new tag, than to trend one in current use. (sea level / ground level etc)

Some are truly spontaneous, others are planned #DefendOurDemocracy

But to make this work well - you need to know that approx 200 accounts will get on board within an hour & tweet up to 5 times using it. There is no point just putting it in a tweet and hoping.

The chances of something coming from Mars are a million to one

If something is trending and you want to help keep it there - put the # in your reply to the post too.

Tags only count in tweets - in usernames they function to identify what you stand for - and that is valuable - but it does not contribute to trending.

And lastly - the question often asked first. How many tags should you use? My answer is 1) use the letter allocation 2) put extra tags at the end 3) don't believe the people who say you should only use 2.

But do only use tags that are relevant. #StopTheCoup

Groups 3,4,5

I will continue this thread later on these, so look out for part 2!!

But #Caturday - and other trending topics #ItsSnowing #MakeAFilmEdible etc - can be used effectively - to move tweets outside the #remain bubble - more later!! #stopbrexit 24/n
To summarise
USE IDENTIFIED #REMAIN TAGS rather than reinventing the wheel!

Use new or event tags for events ONLY - otherwise stick with existing ones. It really helps us.

If you want a tag - check if one exists - if it does - use it. Don't be a splitter!

Sorry - transposed groups 1 and 2 - just realised. Hope this doesn't confuse!!
