“A Boston professor who sits on the board of the NY Times laundered donations from a NYC/Palm Beach-based pedophile released by a Florida US Attorney. This is clearly about Silicon Valley!” is the most New York of takes.
This scandal is going to shake up academic fundraising across the country, especially on the heels of the LA-headquartered athletic admissions scandal. Still, the East Coast elite gotta take the L for covering for Epstein for decades. That is one problem you can’t put on SV.
Also, the Media Lab has always had a very high media coverage/impact ratio and is generally irrelevant to most of the companies sprouting up in SV/SF. Core MIT EECS work (like in CSAIL) has been much more influential but is less flashy. I’m feeling bad for those folks right now.
Many history PhDs in the 2040's will be earned disentangling the legitimate grievances of the techlash from the reaction of the NY/DC elite losing control of information flows. The same information decentralization that underlies many of the complaints also made #MeToo possible.
