The longest war the USA has ever fought continues today in Afghanistan.

The 18th year of this quagmire arrives on October 7th.

The figure for US dead approaches 2,400 & the Taliban continue to hold ever more territory in the country.

Afghanistan was America’s first major folly after Vietnam & the resultant quagmire was highly predictable.

Many foreign forces have invaded Afghanistan & the historical record shows the many unsatisfactory results clearly.

You can’t completely win a war in Afghanistan as an outsider, not in modern times.

The Afghani males make sure of that, no matter what it takes.

The British suffered what came to be called 'Disaster in Afghanistan’ from 1839 to 1842.

The First Anglo-Afghan War ended in the killing of most of the British contingent who had taken Kabul as they retreated in 1842.

Foreigners coming to Afghanistan attempting to quell the indigenous population by force of arms are always harshly dealt with.

The Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878 to 1880) saw Britain have more success.

The British invaded in 1878.

It was not all plain-sailing however. On 3 September 1879, Sir Pierre Cavagnari and all his European companions were massacred.

The Third Anglo-British War (1919) was again relatively successful for the British although it resulted in Waziristan being the seat of nationalism across the years and the tribesmen there became very well armed through the conflict.

The Saur Revolution of 1978 brought an end to the rule of President Daoud Khan & brought a pro-Soviet government to power.

This ultimately led to Soviet troops entering Afghanistan in 1979 & their eventual humiliating withdrawal in 1989.

We all know what came next, 9/11 & the subsequent invasion of Afghanistan by US & its allies in 2001.

The battle against the Taliban has lasted from that time to this & despite everything currently the Taliban control great swathes of the country.

The US presence in Afghanistan is an ongoing tragedy. The Taliban grow stronger & innocents continue to die.

In recent days a US soldier was killed & Donald Trump cancelled a long-prepared peace plan w/ the Taliban.

And so the Afghanistan folly continues.
