LINDY LINKS THREAD — posts I find myself still thinking about at least a year after reading them
1. Too Late for the Pebbles to Vote (2016) status451.com/2016/08/09/too…

@maradydd’s three-part meditation on information silos, preference falsification, and sociopathy. Conceptually dense and beautifully written.
2. Gears in understanding (2017) lesswrong.com/posts/B7P97C27…

Great metaphor illustrating a property of a good mental model: clarity around _exactly_ how different parts of the model interact. Don’t be content with mere correlations — look for gears!
3. Geeks, MOPs, and sociopaths in subculture evolution (2015/@Meaningness) meaningness.com/geeks-mops-soc…

“Scenes” are fueled by geeks until they become attractive to MOPs/laypeople, then they’re milked by sociopaths. Simple, sticky model for how subcultures grow, mature, and decay.
4. A Big Little Idea Called Legibility (2010/@vgr) ribbonfarm.com/2010/07/26/a-b…

Legibility is a surprisingly interesting and important concept. E.g., insiders often deliberately pursue *illegibility* to make it harder for outsiders to control them. I think about this all the time.
5. Politics is the mind-killer (2007/@ESYudkowsky) lesswrong.com/posts/9weLK2AJ…

This post makes a simple but powerful point: that politics, while important for other reasons, is corrosive of epistemic health. Be mindful of how much attention you pay to this domain.
@ESYudkowsky 6. How big a deal was the Industrial Revolution? (2017/@lukeprog) lukemuehlhauser.com/industrial-rev…

To answer the question posed in the title: It was THE BIGGEST DEAL, at least in terms of improvements to human welfare. This is now my go-to/definitive post on the impact of the IR.
7. Classroom chess/war/fog-of-war simulation (2012) reddit.com/r/occupywallst…

High school history teacher uses a very clever elaboration of chess to illustrate group v. group conflict. I can hardly imagine a better use of time in a classroom.
