It's incredible how successful the Bahraini ruling family has been in co-opting Western academics and think tanks to produce a pro-regime narrative of Bahrain. Forums held on the rule of law are empty, but people in the West are fooled. #SEPAD
Presentation on the "genocidal violence" perpetrated against Bahraini Shia civilians in the 1920s. The state was complicit in these attacks. It's difficult to understand contemporary conflict without looking back at this history. Anti-Shia discourse goes back centuries. #SEPAD
"I had to chose between writing this or going back to my favourite place in the world." #Bahrain

Sectarian dynamics have always been more the symptom than the cause of instability in Iraq. The structural problems have not been resolved but there has been a clear shift away from sectarian rhetoric. We have entrenched elites not entrenched sectarian identities. #SEPAD
Regional attitudes towards Iraq have also changed. Iraq's neighbours now see enough room for them without needing to throw the Iraqi baby out with the Iranian bathwater. An understanding that their interests are better served through a stable Iraq. #SEPAD
