Spygate Origins - Thread - Military Revolt, Carnage and the Trail of Tears - Part 2 of 2 based on the work of Sy Hersh
SECTION 1: REVOLT
The prior admin's repeated insistence that Bashar al-Assad must leave office and that there were ‘moderate’ rebel groups in Syria capable of defeating him created dissent, provoked overt opposition, among some of the most senior officers on the Pentagon’s Joint Staff.
Again let's set the players: Mike Morrell was acting CIA Dir July 2011 to Sept, then replaced by Petraeus, who was then replaced again by Morrell in Nov 2012 and then replaced by Brennan Mar 2013. Clapper was DNI and Gen Flynn was DIA Dir July 2012 to Aug 2014, HRC - SoS
The military’s resistance dated back to the summer of 2013, when a highly classified assessment was put together by the DIA and the Joint Chiefs of Staff, then led by General Martin Dempsey.
The report forecasted that the fall of the Assad regime would lead to chaos and, potentially, to Syria’s takeover by jihadi extremists
Lieutenant General Michael Flynn, director of the DIA between 2012 and 2014, confirmed that his agency had sent a constant stream of classified warnings to the civilian leadership about the dire consequences of toppling Assad.
August 2012 - This DIA document an IAR, a intelligence information report, was obtained by Judicial Watch. It warned that AQ/IS was driving the opposition and warned that Mosul and Ramadi would be IS targets and even the declaration of an IS

2013 the Joint Chiefs decided to take steps against the extremists without going through political channels, by providing US intel to the militaries of other nations, on the understanding that it would be passed on to the Syrian army and used against the common enemy, AQ and IS.
Once the flow of US intelligence began, Germany, Israel and RUSSIA started passing on information about the whereabouts and intent of radical jihadist groups to the Syrian army;
In return, Syria provided information about its own capabilities and intentions. There was no direct contact between the US and the Syrian military
The Joint Chiefs let it be known that in return the US would require four things: Assad must restrain Hizbullah from attacking Israel; he must renew the stalled negotiations with Israel to reach a settlement on the Golan Heights;
he must agree to accept RUSSIAN and other outside military advisers; and he must commit to holding open elections after the war with a wide range of factions included
By July 2013, the CIA-sponsored (RAT LINE) secret flow of arms from Libya to the Syrian opposition, via Turkey, had been underway for more than a year. The operation was largely run out of a covert CIA annex in Benghazi and could not be stopped.
At the same time, the DIA’s assessment had been circulated widely, but although many in the American intelligence community were aware that the Syrian opposition was dominated by extremists the CIA-sponsored weapons kept coming, presenting a continuing problem for Assad’s army.
The CIA was then approached by a representative from the Joint Chiefs with a suggestion: there were far less costly weapons available in Turkish arsenals that could reach the Syrian rebels within days, and without a boat ride
We worked with Turks we trusted who were not loyal to Erdoğan and got them to ship the jihadists in Syria all the obsolete weapons in the arsenal, including M1 carbines that hadn’t been seen since the Korean War and lots of Soviet arms.
It was a message Assad could understand: “We have the power to diminish a presidential policy in its tracks.”’
But as the army gained in strength with the Joint Chiefs’ support, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey escalated their financing and arming of AQ and IS, which by the end of 2013 had made enormous gains on both sides
SECTION 2: IT'S TOO LATE…. RAQQA FALLS
In January 2014, IS took complete control of Raqqa and the tribal areas around it from al-Nusra and established the city as its base. Assad still controlled 80 per cent of the Syrian population, but he had lost a vast amount of territory.
CIA efforts to train the so-called "moderate rebel forces" had failed badly.
In Jan 2014, despairing at the lack of progress, John Brennan, summoned American and Sunni Arab intel chiefs from throughout the Middle East to a secret meeting in DC, with the aim of persuading Saudi Arabia to stop supporting extremist fighters in Syria. It was ignored.
To make matters worse, American intelligence had accumulated intercept and human intelligence demonstrating that Turkey had been supporting AQ for years, and was now doing the same for IS
Enter the Russians. Putin’s desire was to prevent Assad from suffering the same fate as Gaddafi. Putin had watched a video of Gaddafi’s savage death three times, a video that shows him being sodomized with a bayonet.
In a Nov speech, Obama declared that the ‘principal targets’ of the Russian airstrikes ‘have been the moderate opposition’. It’s a line that the admin along with most of the American MSM has rarely strayed from, even though "moderate" opposition never existed
Russian incursions into Turkish airspace began soon after Putin authorized the bombings, and the Russian air force deployed electronic jamming systems that interfered with Turkish radar. This eventually led to the downing of a Russian jet by Turkey
At the end of 2014 a German journalist was allowed acccess to IS, he was told….All the weapons entering Syria via the RAT LINE and elsewhere ended up in the hands of AQ or IS
The 4 core elements of Obama’s Syria were: an insistence that Assad must go; that no anti-IS coalition with Russia is possible; that Turkey is a steadfast ally in the war against terrorism; and that there are significant moderate forces for the US to support.
All 4 core elements proved to be mistaken or false.
SECTION 3: CARNAGE AND THE NEVER ENDING TRAIL OF TEARS
The Aug 21, 2013 gas attacks in the Ghouta neighborhood of Damascus did not discriminate between young and old.
To date over 230,000 civilians have been killed in Syria
Who can forget the plight of the Yazidi women and children, while the world looked elsewhere?
Who can forget this picture of a 4 year old Syrian refugee girl surrendering to a cameraman? I can't... it's forever seared in my mind, it haunts me. I REFUSE to look away.
There are over 5+ million Syrian refugees of which 75% are women and children. Over 9 million have left their homes.
Raqqa is finally liberated but leveled. In Feb 2019 a mass grave was found holding over 3,500 bodies believed to have been executed by IS
The never ending war continues on…. President Trump knew what was happening back in 2013
General Dempsey and his colleagues on the Joint Chiefs of Staff kept their dissent out of bureaucratic channels, and survived in office. General Michael Flynn did not. ‘Flynn incurred the wrath of the White House by insisting on telling the truth about Syria'
Gen Flynn who tried to warn us all, was fired as Director of the DIA in April 2014. Is it any wonder he was targeted by the coup plotters going after Pres. Trump and then silenced by our Justice system.
#FreeFlynn
What Sy Hersh did not talk about was the think-tank support for ousting Assad, much like during the run up to the Iraq war. The same players were advocating, Brookings, etc.
