Going to post this tweet for posterity.

This morning, I jumped in on a Sarah MacLean’s tweet with a suggested scoring rubric for the RITA awards, and she suggested I send it to RWA.

I will email it today, but also posting it here for folks to read.

As an aside, I thought of this on the fly, but I have experience & training in public policy work and with creating objective standards from my former life as a Defense Analyst w/ the U.S. GAO.

The GAO are lovingly called “the Congressional watchdogs” ☺️

Possible scoring rubric for the RITA awards -

A score of 1-3 = serious issues with story structure (plot problems, character arc issues, and no romantic thread)

A score of 4-5 = Doing well on 1-2 pillars of story structure listed above but not all three pillars

3/
A score of 6-7 = meets basic story structure components but the voice and/or premise and/or narrative throughline isn’t compelling
(ie, I’m able to put this book down.)

Score 8-9 = structure is superb, the writing is compelling & addictive, the voice is unique & different 4/
Score of 10 = meets all of the traits of an 8-9 AND the story holds timeless truths or a premise that will stay with a reader long after they finish reading.

The Story has the ability to change society and culture as a whole. This book has the potential to be a classic
