On Lib Dems' revoke policy... There are of course legitimacy issues that come with, say, a govt elected on 35% of the vote setting aside a 52% referendum mandate 1/x
And I'm sure the SNP won't be shy in pointing this out if they find themselves elected as a majority party in the Scottish parliament 2/x
And I think there are reasonable concerns Revoke might put off Conservative Remainers from switching to the Lib Dems 3/x
So I'm not 100% sold on the policy, in principle or tactically 4/x
BUT it's kinda ironic to see pundits usually tripping over themselves to dismiss the Lib Dems as irrelevant now pearl-clutching at a policy LibDems have said would only happen if they were the majority party heading the next govt 5/x
I mean, it's just not going to happen. But if it did happen, I think it's not unreasonable to say that would signify something pretty enormous had just occurred 6/x
Besides, those who say the policy is flawed - which, I agree, it is - then have to propose something better. And the problem with the 'People's Vote' / 2nd referendum position has been highlighted by Labour's trouble defending it 7/x
It is plainly risible to promise a Remain v 'credible alternative' plebiscite negotiated by you as a govt if you're then going to campaign against your own deal 8/x
Besides looking silly, I think it falls pretty plainly foul of Tusk's "don't waste this time" advice (and will further exasperate the EU) 9/x
So while I'm not mad keen on Revoke as a policy, like with most attempts to resolve our Brexit mess, I'm left thinking it's probably the least-worst option open to the LibDems atm. Which just about satisfies me,
given it's 99.9% hypothetical anyway. 10/10
