Thread: When I say I have to miss class for a doctor's appointment what I actually mean is I have to miss class for a specialist appointment or procedure I have been waiting anywhere between 3 to 8 months to schedule, at a hospital 2 hours away from where I live 1/
because even though my chronic illnesses are not very rare there is only one center in the entire state that is somewhat competent in helping treat my chronic condition, which, no I cannot just ignore or refuse to treat because unfortunately ignoring and refusing to treat 2/
my chronic condition means I will be unconscious in your class and/or having to drop out of your class and/or having to drop out of school (which has happened). So. When a disabled student says they have to miss class for a doctor's appointment, I don't care if your class 3/
is a writing workshop class. I don't care if "attendance is part of the grade." I don't care if your class only meets once a week. I'm not missing my doctor's appointment. Don't try and make a student feel bad about having to miss class 4/
for medical reasons. This includes: 1. marking students down for classes missed for medical reasons 2. trying to tell a student to reschedule an appointment 3. not putting the disability statement on the syllabus 4. treating disability (esp. flexibility) accommodations 5/
as an extra burden, which can be communicated in a variety of ways (i.e. sighing, questioning, outright denying). My chronic condition is serious. I should not have to be forced to disclose or prove how "serious" it is in order for professors to grant accommodations 6/
Denial and skepticism over accommodation requests often forces disabled students into feeling they have to disclose and/or prove how "serious" their illnesses and/or disabilities are. This often leaves disabled students feeling vulnerable and exploited. 7/
When I say I have to miss class for a doctors appointment, I have to miss class for a doctors appointment. I have already carefully tried to weigh the + and - of the impact missing class will have on me. I'm going to my doctors appointment. This is more important #AcademicAbleism
