Privilege doesn't mean we're terrible. It means we have advantages those from other backgrounds don't have.
Whiteness is a huge privilege.
So is education.
We can't discount them.
We can be privileged on one axis and not on others.
White authors have HUGE advantages. But when we write on publishing we mostly ignore that glaring systemic problem.
Heather Demetrios raises many useful points but continues that tradition.
It was hard & humiliating making a career. I still get rejections. It sucks.
But it's even harder when you're not white. When you're writing stories gatekeepers can't fathom.
We white authors are privileged. White middle class authors even more so. White straight male cis middle class authors most of all.
We can deny it all we want. But the evidence of being published more, promoted more, paid more, belies our denials.
