BREAKING: Protests have broken out in Tahrir Square and a number of other places around Egypt, calling for the removal of President Sisi. #ميدان_التحرير
Videos showing protests in Alexandria, Mahala, Suez and other regional areas are also filling social media.
This is the first time mass protests have broken out in Egypt since the military coup in 2013, after which strict anti-protest laws prohibited any public gatherings not sanctioned by the military.
This has all been prompted by Mohamed Ali, a property tycoon and actor who fled Egypt to Spain and began releasing daily videos for over a month criticising corruption in the country, and targetting El-Sisi and other military generals.
Earlier this week, Mohamed Ali called for mass protests against Sisi to take place on Friday night. An hour ago, people started filling the streets surrounding Tahrir Square, reviving anti-government chants from 2011.
Abdel Fattah el-Sisi took power in Egypt in a military coup in 2013 off the back of protests against then president Mohammed Morsi. He was since accused of cracking down on opposition, protest, media and free speech, and locking up more than 40,000 people.
BREAKING: reports the protest in Tahrir Square was disbanded by riot police and plain-clothed policemen, around 20-25 arrests
Videos showing riot police breaking up protests in Suez, with other reports of tear gas being used in Tahrir
Whistleblower Mohamed Ali just released a video calling on the Defence Minister Mohamed Zaki to arrest Sisi
FYI the president Abdel Fattah el-Sisi isn't even in the country right now. He just left this morning heading to New York ahead of the UN General Assembly, where he was set to make a speech on Wednesday.
