Hello new followers! A brief thread telling you a bit about what I do that might interest you (besides semi-vulgar rants about pockets and pictures of me in ties and waistcoats).
1. The thing I'm probably most proud of at the moment is my @tes podcast on #maths education..
@tes ..where I interview maths education researchers about their work. It's medium-length (35-45 mins), the calibre of guests so far has been OUTSTANDING, and we have a lot of fun. It's been amazing CPD for me, and it never fails to astonish me how illuminating it can be...
@tes ..to be able to probe at some ideas with someone who is a real expert. It's a joy to produce. A great deal of work goes into it: pre-reading (sometimes of almost an entire PhD!), joke writing (with the wonderful @Darrenmacey), and writing the accompanying article. Here are..
@tes @Darrenmacey The episodes that have been released so far:
1. Multiplicative reasoning with Prof Margaret Brown tes.com/news/how-give-…
2. Variation theory with Prof Anne Watson
tes.com/news/could-var…
@tes @Darrenmacey 3. Microworlds with Prof Dame Celia Hoyles
tes.com/news/maths-mic…
4. Ems Lord of @nrichmaths fame on collaborative problem solving tes.com/news/collabora…
5. Generalising with Dr Helen Drury
tes.com/news/podcast-b…
@tes @Darrenmacey @nrichmaths I have another seven or eight in production at the moment, and they are dynamite. It is a particular pleasure to be able to highlight the achievements of some of the maths education women whose work has been so influential and powerful in my field, and whom without exception..
@tes @Darrenmacey @nrichmaths ..have been so very welcoming, supportive and willing to collaborate with me. I can't quite believe that no-one has said no yet! If you know of someone (anywhere in the world, because tech) who is an expert maths education researcher that I should interview, let me know!
@tes @Darrenmacey @nrichmaths I also write and edit Espressos ☕️, which are two-page filtered maths education research reviews for maths teachers of any stage. If you are or know of a maths teacher, I would love for you to have a read/send me any feedback you have (DMs are open). Here are the latest ones...
@tes @Darrenmacey @nrichmaths 1. What does research suggest about early development of graphicacy? with @Darrenmacey
cambridgemaths.org/espresso/view/…
2. How might variation theory affect mathematics teaching and learning?
cambridgemaths.org/espresso/view/…
@tes @Darrenmacey @nrichmaths ▶️These two are really special, because they are the first ones my most excellent colleague Dominika Majewska has written (my only contribution was editorial/drawing pictures)... 😄
@tes @Darrenmacey @nrichmaths 3. What are the issues surrounding the use of realistic contexts in the mathematics classroom?
cambridgemaths.org/espresso/view/…
4. What does research suggest about effective utilisation of teaching assistants in the maths classroom?
cambridgemaths.org/espresso/view/…
@tes @Darrenmacey @nrichmaths Here's another really special one: @RinaPYLai1 took the format and wrote about #computationalthinking - it's even been translated into Chinese, too! 🙂
cambridgemaths.org/espresso/view/…
@tes @Darrenmacey @nrichmaths @RinaPYLai1 I also manage the Cambridge Maths blog, Mathematical Salad... 🍇🍉🥑🍒
Where EVERY SINGLE WEEK we publish something about maths teaching, learning, policy, research or general musings about the place and use of #maths in society.
Some recent examples...
@tes @Darrenmacey @nrichmaths @RinaPYLai1 1. 'Keeping mathematics close to your heart ♥️', where I talk about thinking and feeling in #maths ...
cambridgemaths.org/blogs/keeping-…
2. 'International mathematician of mystery', where my colleague @Rach_Read considers #maths as an international language...
@tes @Darrenmacey @nrichmaths @RinaPYLai1 @Rach_Read 3. 'Venntersection' , where I look at the different ways Venn diagrams get used in education and beyond...cambridgemaths.org/blogs/vennters…
4. 'The trouble with graphs', where
@Darrenmacey
analyses the development of graphical literacy
cambridgemaths.org/blogs/the-trou…
@tes @Darrenmacey @nrichmaths @RinaPYLai1 @Rach_Read 5. We also have our 'Intersections' series, where we interview people in all kinds of different jobs about how they feel about #maths; here's one with my mate Pete aka @ratracecycles :
cambridgemaths.org/blogs/intersec…
or 'maths and the sci-fi conrunner' : cambridgemaths.org/blogs/intersec…
@tes @Darrenmacey @nrichmaths @RinaPYLai1 @Rach_Read @ratracecycles 6. I'm also really proud of our 'Seven Questions' series, where we have been lucky enough to interview the likes of..
@misterwootube cambridgemaths.org/blogs/seven-qu…
@ch_nira
cambridgemaths.org/blogs/seven-qu…
@mathsjem
cambridgemaths.org/blogs/seven-qu…
and many, many more! ✍️📰
@tes @Darrenmacey @nrichmaths @RinaPYLai1 @Rach_Read @ratracecycles @misterwootube @ch_nira @mathsjem I also write loads of stuff for all kinds of people 😄
For example..
1. Here is me riffing on board gaming and problem solving for @Nat_Numeracy ... (the first paragraph was one of the most fun things to write EVER)
nationalnumeracy.org.uk/supporting-par…
@tes @Darrenmacey @nrichmaths @RinaPYLai1 @Rach_Read @ratracecycles @misterwootube @ch_nira @mathsjem @Nat_Numeracy 2. Here is me ruminating on the goodness of fit between research session/paper titles and content for @BSRLM_maths :
bsrlm.org.uk/a-research-tal…
3. A piece on wearing menswear and how it changed me

@tes @Darrenmacey @nrichmaths @RinaPYLai1 @Rach_Read @ratracecycles @misterwootube @ch_nira @mathsjem @Nat_Numeracy @BSRLM_maths And finally, oh - finally, I have been labouring for about eighteen months on this, with @grahamandre, with contributions from @LetToysBeToys @letclothesbe @JayneOsgood @Roussel_Capra and others... this has been a real labour of 💜 and a joy, out 6 Dec!
