What do you do with a problematic border you wish wasn’t there? Move it inside your own country? Some thoughts on the latest ''backstop' alternative arrangements suggestions /1

You could say this coming from the PM is more of the same "have your cake and eat it" narrative but what does "moving fluidly" actually mean? /2
With a common SPS zone +regulatory regime for industrial goods, what happens to the border?
If the UK is out of the CU+SM there is a customs border between NI and ROI. Regulatory alignment changes nothing here. /3
So back where we started: the UK is asking the EU to treat the new customs border differently than all other EU borders, to exempt the Irish border from the obligation to function within the framework of the Union's customs legislation and border procedures in exchange for /4
some sort of regulatory alignment.

Separating the customs border from the regulatory one is, for obvious reasons, not the common practice and not something provided for in the Union's framework (despite some examples of EU's customs territories not applying VAT rules) /5
The regulatory barrier in the Irish Sea can address product standards but from a #customs perspective, nothing changes – where do checks take place? What about tariffs? How do you police the border and ensure compliance and how does EU ensure integrity of the SM? /6
It's not so much about 'political will' but finding an acceptable answer to the same old question of how do we deal with the mother of all borders/7
