I’m 47. This will be the third impeachment inquiry in my lifetime. There was *one* in the 185 years before Nixon.
Not sure what to make of that. Certainly more than these four presidents committed impeachable offenses. But the establishment norms we refer to — with insufficient irony — as American democracy are certainly collapsing, for both better and worse.
Some people saying, “No, Nixon resigned.” Right — after an impeachment inquiry began. Others say what about Tyler, or Buchanan, etc.? Tyler maybe counts. Didn’t get far. And weak proposals that don’t have majority support in either house are just so much noise.
Other people saying, But what about President X or Y who should have been impeached? The answer is usually, They should have been. But they weren’t. Trump should be; and maybe he will be.
