It’s exhausting but unsurprising how many people’s ideas of what religion is on a fundamental level are entirely shaped by Christianity
For a lot of people, religion is about cultural practice as much as — if not more than — a belief in some higher power, which makes sense when you think of religion as tribal practices.
That’s not, inherently, about subservience to some higher power or hierarchical organization! It’s about participating in community building rituals that flag your membership as part of a tribe.
I was trying to explain to an atheist friend why, even though I’m an atheist, I’m not on board with the idea that religion should be wholesale scrapped. And what it really came down to was that for me, religion can be *culture* and community and that is worth something still.
Also worth noting that there are religious/spiritual practices that one cannot “convert” to anymore than one can convert to, say, being Italian, because these practices are inextricable from ethnic heritage. (Zoroastrianism, for instance)
Also gotta say, again, that it is hilarious to me that atheists who continue to celebrate Christmas somehow continue to fail to understand that religion is a *cultural practice* and one they are participating in independent of a belief in a god
“I don’t believe in Jesus I just celebrate Christmas because it’s some nice traditions I share with my family” yes congrats now you know why I observe all the bits of Judaism I observe
