Globally there are more than 65 million displaced people/ #refugees. A vast majority of these are feeing wars, conflicts and gross human rights abuses. Most of the refugees are hosted by countries outside Europe. /1
#Oughterard #DirectProvision #Ireland
Some refugee hosting nations are among the poorer countries. #Turkey #Lebanon #Bangladesh #Jordan #Egypt #Sudan #Pakistan #Uganda #Iran #Ethiopia host majority of the global #refugees /2
When someone is fleeing war or torture or human rights abuses, the first and foremost duty of humanity is to open our doors to refugees. No good to let people die at our doorsteps while we discuss where and how #AsylumSeekers should be hosted.
Our grievances and anger to our government should not be translated into anti-asylum seeker sentiments. The lack of GP services or public transport or housing issues in #Oughterard cannot be used to turn our backs to asylum seekers. /4
We all know that #DirectProvision is inhumane. Marching with placards “#Oughterard says no to inhumane direct provision centres” is not convincing. It sound like Oughterard says no to #DirectProvision centres in #Oughterard /5
The inhumanity of #DirectProvision centres does not get any better elsewhere. If not in #Oughterard, #AsylumSeekers will just be piled in another place in another town. Will Oughterard protest against this? /6
By the #Oughterard logic no town should have asylum seekers in direct provision. But then Oughterard is not campaigning for #HomesForAll or #EndDirectProvision either? /7
Adding ‘inhumane’ to the slogans doesn’t change the fact that asylum seekers are not welcome. A humane, honest campaign would start with welcoming the humans, the asylum seekers and rejecting the system of direct provision /8
Not welcoming the humans, the asylum seekers, the call for ‘no inhumane direct provision centres’ becomes self serving. It becomes not about solidarity but about ‘not in my backyard’ /9
The Irish government has purposeful policy to disperse asylum seekers out of bigger towns into smaller places like #Rooskey, #Oughterard etc. Places that have lost so much economic activity. Housing, health, jobs, transport is a issue /10
This should be exposed and challenged. But the other of things is important. This anger to government cannot be allowed to turn into suspicion and fear of the ‘others’ and racism in whatever form. /11
I hope people of #Oughterard can mobilise similar numbers for housing, health and other public services and can stand in solidarity with asylum seekers. Not welcoming them into their town does not make direct provision humane /12
