Look, I’ll be honest.

I just find Europe terribly boring.
I am much more interested in trying to find common intellectual ground with conservatives in India or in Japan than I am with conservatives in Germany or the Netherlands.
Because politics in India is *interesting.*
This leads to some blind spots. I have intuitions and biases about what the Kremlin is up to, but if I am completely honest my understanding of modern Russia is shallow, shallow. I have trouble bothering myself to read any think tank report on Russian military shenanigans
And inter EU issues are even worse. @henryfarrell’s most recent book is the only one that has ever been able to remotely hold my attention.
@henryfarrell My policy preference has long been for the EU to sort itself out, get strong enough a military capability to deter the Russians on their own so we don’t have to worry about it so much.

This is actually quite sensible. But I wonder how much of it simply comes from a selfish
Desire not to have to think about that continent and its problems ever again.
Ok, I exaggerate a bit. But look, tradcons intent on building some spurious Euro-American ‘civilization’ movement that will force me to pay attention to Austrian domestic politics
I don’t buy it. America is a child of the Anglo political and cultural tradition, which from the renaissance forward defined itself in opposition to the European continent.
Americans in turn developed a set of political institutions and cultural byways designed to set ourselves apart from the broader Anglosphere. That’s two levels of remove from the Austrians.
The desire to reconnect with a civilization Europeans themselves killed off 70 years ago is quaint... but stupid.

No American—and certainly no American conservative—can escape 1776.
That is the whole point of course-they want an America stripped of the cultural priorities that have defined it since its founding.

Thus all of this western civ mythologizing. It is a bald attempt to cut America from its actual traditions and graft it onto a foreign fantasy.
Sometimes foreign grafting is necessary. But if so, why limit ourselves to the bowing before the shadows of the Austrian Hungarian Empire?
If it is about aesthetics, I’ll take the Tang or the Mughals over classical Vienna any day.
If it is about faith... well, there are actual places in the world where Catholicism is strong and healthy. Why no rush to learn from and work with them?
Add to this the fact that half the continent wavers between hate, disgust, envy, and moral opprobrium any time American culture or people come up in conversation.

Do you know who is not reflexively repelled by American culture and politics? East Asians. And Indians. And Africans.
The real question you need to ask these types: Why so eager to root a new political movement in the ideas of people who view the last three hundred years of American achievement with nothing but contempt?
(And who have not been especially good at accomplishing traditionalist aims in any case?)
Think over those questions....

And let the reader understand.
