So, arguing with my Republican relatives on Facebook again — which I try only to do for educational purposes, to see what propaganda they're absorbing, since actual persuasion is impossible — what I was struck by is how Trump supporters don't even bother defending him.
Instead, the strategy is to argue that *all* politicians are evil and corrupt. So, my relative, in this case, flipped out and started arguing that Warren must be a criminal and liar, since they all are. She has no evidence, no reason to believe this, but she dug in.
This is Trump's strategy, in a nutshell: Convince voters that everyone is as sociopathic, evil, and dishonest as he is, and so they might as well vote for him, because at least he sticks it to people they hate and fear.
When it comes to the Fox News junkies, this strategy works a priori. They don't need evidence or even an accusation to decide the Democrat must be a criminal, since that is what they have decided to believe because it's the only thing that allows them to sleep at night.
The question is how well this "both sides are equally bad" strategy works on low information voters, of the sort that voted 3rd party or Trump in 2016 because they kept hearing about Wikileaks and Clinton's emails, things they knew were "scandals" but didn't know why.
My sense is that Biden is more vulnerable to this tactic than anyone else in the race, because his centrism and long track record and, unfortunately, the ability of Trump to strong-arm media into a "both sides" narrative on Ukraine.
But I will note that while my relative was insisting Warren was dirty, she couldn't come up with one example of what she thought might be proof. That lack of anything to hang the fake scandal on is interesting, and worth putting away when considering the quality of electability.
"They'll rat-fuck any candidate." True. But how well it sticks is pretty variable. They tried, for a decade, to rat-fuck Obama and it never stuck. Some people really are hard to pin lies onto.
I'll add that my relative knows I'm a journalist, and so knows that I actually know a lot about these politicians. But that expertise is treated as an affront, like who am I to think I know something just because I actually do. This is also a common attitude with Trump voters.
