Micromobility Conf Berlin was electric! 700 makers from all around the world building a more sustainable future! I wrote up summary notes for friends who could not make the event and am sharing here for anyone else interested. Very rough and unedited. @MicromobilityCo #MME
Keynote: The Smartphone on Wheels by Horace Dediu
⁃Pulls together 3 macro trends driving society towards a mm world (increasing concentration of population in cities, unsustainable use of space by cars, smarter micro-vehicles)
⁃ “In US each car has c.8 parking spots.”
- In most cities room allocated to cars is =c. 1 house
- Estimates micromobility has reached 250m rides in 2 years
⁃ “Micromobility is urban freedom, that’s what customers want to buy”
The Case for the Pedal Bike: Erdem Ovacik - CEO, @Donkey_Republic. Rides onto stage. Incredible energy.

⁃ Big announcement, rolling our ebikes across their fleet.
⁃ Been around longer than most MM companies, always worked with cities on executing expansion plans.
- Already in 50 cities without any subsidies.
⁃ Called out GoogleMaps on what’s the social benefit of nudging people from walking trips to scooter trips? vs taking trips from cars. Audience goes silent as point hits home.
⁃ Raising a new round of financing.Investors, reach out!
High-Performance Micromobility: Corinna Vogel, COO, @Bond_Mobility

⁃ The bike looks incredible, I’ve heard it previously described as “the Porsche of ebikes”
⁃ Corinna presents w very positive energy, focuses on benefits of ebikes vs scooters (healthier, safer, faster!).
⁃ “Bond bikes substitute more car trips while low performance ebikes & scooters substitute transit & walking.” Ties into Google & Lime driving folks away from walking. #DontbeEvil.
⁃ Lots of focus vs scooters in this presentation. Well presented, audience is buzzing!
On-board Intelligence for Micromobility: Assaf, CEO, @Superpedestrian

⁃ Have developed a vehicle intelligence system for mm. Seems like a real-time doctors for mm fleets. Specs of analytics seem comprehensive, anyone operating or thinking of starting a fleet should reach out.
⁃ They build to minimise ops costs for operators while maximising rider safety.
⁃ Seems like a nice derivative bet on industry, call its the “picks & shovels” play on a new sector ($$$)
⁃ With all this data they’ve also built up a predictive maintenance system! Incredible.
Micromobility as a service: Taco Carlier, Co-Founder, @VanMoof!

⁃ What a beautiful device! These are an eye-catcher on the streets!
⁃ Built company with his brother. D2C model, stores in 9 cities, focused on ebikes
⁃ They design every part from scratch in house. Creates a seamless exp across software & hardware. 😍 (@Apple folks in the audience probably salivating, jk)
⁃ They employ “bike hunters” 💪 if someone steals your bike they go after them.
⁃ 😂😂 VanMoof started printing TVs on the delivery boxes, which reduced defective deliveries by 80%. Audience breaks into uncontrollable laughter 😂
⁃ They launched a subscription model! Reducing barriers to get on ebikes. Soon they will offer ebikes to businesses as a perk.
⁃ Reach out to @TacoCarlier if you want to know more.
@oliverbruce mentions they closed 7.5m in crowdfunding, in a mere few hours! Showing love of the community.
⁃ Blood is pumping, audience is on the tip of their chairs.
Inclusive Mobility: Nicola Dallatana of Toyota Tsusho

⁃ (Nice to see a OEM going the event. Where are the rest? 🤔)
⁃ “how do you get folks who might not physically be able to use a bike or scooter to still have car/taxi alternatives?” Need to account for all in MM movement!
⁃ Have developed wheelchairs that can be used without engagement of hands
⁃ Have a partnership with Indigo with inclusive mobility fleets already live. Good to see large OEM executing. Anyone wanting to further this space should reach out.
Keynote: The Future of Self-Driving Scooters, from Tony Ho, VP of BD, Segway:

⁃ Starts w video of semi-automatic rebalancing of 3 wheelers!
⁃ The 3 wheeler brings in anthropomorphic tones, maybe it’s a conscious design decision to reduce scooter hate from the broader community
⁃ Segway focused on bringing “efficiency & potential profit making ability for fleet operators”
⁃ Interesting piece on ‘deidentiying’ faces that the 180degree inbuilt camera picks up. Very important esp for EU & US geographies.
⁃ Tony does a live demo of driving a three wheel scooter in China and it’s been programmed to go 50m around obstacles. Imagination runs wild of where this tech will be in 12 months time! Makes remote control of a device on other side of the world look scarily easy.
Panel: Software for Micromobility Providers, mod Oliver Bruce

Oliver: What’s the biggest challenges for each of you to execute?
Particle: “We survayed 800 people: debugging unhealthy devices & over the air software updates”
Vulog: “Helping clients maximise utilisation & profit”
Oliver: What’s new on platforms, what’s exciting that you see emerging?
Vulog: Profitability is a challenge for MM so they see more multimodality on existing platforms as a way to drive profit. Mentions a LEV from Getaround that can be used on both roads & bike lanes (🤯🤯 wow)
(Quick break to check out food trucks, seems like burgers 🍔 are the popular option, I opt for the Banh Mi)
Panel: Software for cities! (Joining half way)

+ All panelists repeating a theme of taking a cooperative approach with cities & operators to build platforms.
+ Great question by @c_ehrlichman : What data do cities request from operators?
+ Folks are tight lipped but, but share its vehicle counts, trips, and incentivise companies by saying of utilisation &/ or lifecycle > x months then operators can get permits for more vehicles.
+ Trafi: Four areas that cities care about 1) Sustainability - Incentives for shared mobility to lower cars in cities 2) How to lower barriers to shared mobility 3) How do all services fit in together 4) Cities want to compete to be first in bringing new services
Keynote: Design for Women: India’s last mile lessons by Divya! Cofounder of Bikxie! 🇮🇳 🙏👌

⁃ Building a service by women for women! Solving for different mobility patterns. Awesome demo video, look it up on their website
⁃ The WeChat like “super-app” they have built looks incredible. I’d recommend digging deeper into this business as a lot could be learnt for US & Europe.
Panel: Micromobility Exec Roundtable!

@tim : “We have companies with c. half billion in funding on the stage. What makes you different from each other?”, audience laughs, execs twitch.
⁃ Tier: We make very few mistakes.
⁃ Circ: We are orange
⁃ Voi: We were orange first.
(Good to see humour. Ps the hall is jam packed, very seat taken, standing space limited 🙌🏽)
⁃ Most players are working on swappable batteries. And working with cities. All execs agree that market cannot sustain all players on the market long term.
⁃ Tim hones in on operator unit economics asking when can we expect profitability. Execs squirm, and everyone says future scooter models will be able to bring the business back into the green $$$
⁃ Wind anecdote: found organised crime gangs in Spain and started hunting them down with police who were taking 100s of scooters, flashing them and reselling!
⁃ Grow: Theft was 20% of fleet on final weekend in Mexico City. This is of a 1000+ fleet!
Keynote: The First to 100m rides, Joe Kraus, President @limebike

(phone died so no photos & less detailed notes)

⁃ Linking scooters to sustainability
⁃ Asking competition to align around what’s best for industry
⁃ Brought an emotional tone to the conversation
Panel: Capital for Micromobility

Some snippets from memory as phone died.

@martinmignot : “Scooter prices on per min basis are likely as high as they will ever be”
@prescottwatson : Announced on stage they have invested in Bolt Bikes, also that the CEO had a relevant and impressive background in both managing shared fleets but also working with the on demand workers who use the product. Great team
@talbot: “Too much money is what kills companies. Constrained capital provides discipline.” Could have done a mic drop here and walked off.
@alisongriswold brought up a good point regarding “the cult of the founder” and linked this to Travis Kalanick & Adam Neumann.
Mignot gave a good response saying that two extreme examples in a very large set so its not a trend but rather outliers who the media feeds on.
Boom, ok folks, that’s all - hope that was informative to those of you who could not make it and hopefully gives you a taste of what to expect for next time. Would def recommend going. Very excited to see what the community builds until the next time we meet!
