I'm currently writing a book on Harold Gillies, the "Father of Plastic Surgery," who rebuilt soldiers' faces during WWI. I want you to know that this book floats on a river of my own tears. Some of these cases are devastating. I only hope I can do these men's stories justice. 💔
I've spent the last hour weeping over a pilot who was severely burned after his aircraft crashed. His eye was removed, and he went through several operations only to die of shock & infection. Gillies wrote: “One could have wished that this brave fellow had had a happier death.”
Please note the above photo is not the pilot. His wounds were far more extensive. The fire obliterated his face.
