It is so clearly illegal that NO ONE should be able to hem and haw about it.

It is a point of very explicit Constitutional LAW. You should have been able to say NO! w/o hesitation.
You could have said "No, it's not appropriate...▶️
You had the chance to inform constituents that, contrary right wing claims, it is NOT ok to invite foreign gov'ts to interfere w/our elections. That it's no biggie. That "everybody does it."
In other words, you have no spine.
I was incorrect abt it being in the constitution. It's in a law that was passed in 1938. It has been applied numerous times to people who have refused to testify despite subpoenas.
