This implies not only that CH4 which has accumulated in the surface water layer could be released to the atmosphere, but also that the amount of CH4 which has accumulated within the entire water column during the summer could be released to the atmosphere.
Increasing periods of open water implies an increasing number of storm events.. Such events have the potential to rapidly ventilate bubble-transported and dissolved CH4 from the water column, producing high emission rates to the atmosphere
