For weeks and months, i have been tracking the arctic temperatures and the decline of the icecap.
Wondering why it was so warm , and for so long.
What is happening there? Icecap is down over 50%.
Albedo effect will be massively impacted by this.

We learned a few days ago, that scientific expedition in the east siberian arctic just found methane fountains bubbling on the sea surface , in the middle of the east siberian sea.

Here is the theory:
1/ Increasing periods of open water implies an increasing number of storm events.. Such events have the potential to rapidly ventilate bubble-transported and dissolved CH4 from the water column, producing high emission rates to the atmosphere

2/Fall convection in late September and early October (NOW) is particularly important because at this time, the probability of convection penetrating down to the seafloor can reach 40–50% over the total area of the ESAS; in shallow waters (<20 m) such probability can reach 100%
3/ The methane captured in the seabed could then be released, thanks to the warmer water melting the frozen seabed
The methane could reach the surface if the sea isn't too deep. It will quickly go up in the atmosphere and won't be picked up by ground sensors.

Here is the research i did, thanks to the new #copernicus satellite program
If i am correct, the data is collected by S5P, launched in 2017 and that can analyse the layers of the atmosphere

I checked data in 3 areas
We know the north pole melts very fast and is warming fast
I decided to check north America and Antarctica (not melting as much as north pole)
3 levels every time. Surface reading , 500 hPa (approx 5000 meters high) and very high (50 hPa)
Antarctica
Almost no methane in Antarctica
What about America?
Reading are PPBV ( per billion)
Some methane at surface and more at 500 hPa levels,in some areas. (fracking , i guess, and agriculture)

Now comes the moment of truth
First , here are the surface readings and the very high altitude readings
Some methane in Scandinavia (october 11) . Forests decaying? and gas production in Russia i presume (Yamal peninsula) ..nothing in high altitude again
Now comes the STUNNING DATA

In both readings (500 and 850 hPa), the arctic is swimming in a cloud of methane.
As the methane dissolves into co2 after a few years, this should be fresh methane, and lots is OVER SEA

Now here are global reading at mid Altitude and the temperature anomaly map
the arctic today is 3.1 C over average, and bathing in methane.
