/9 There is something off about the #KurdishBetrayal narrative being used to describe US actions in Syria. My feed is full of hashtags denouncing the fact that #TrumpBetrayedKurds by withdrawing US troops based in #NorthEasternSyria
/9 To be betrayed implies that there were grounds for trust to begin with.
Yes, Kurdish and US forces were briefly allied against the common enemy of the #IslamicState. But that was an enemy in part created by a catastrophic US foreign policy in the Middle East
/9 The US are now doing what they have always done - including when they implemented policies that gave rise to IS - acting in their own self interest, without any foresight beyond election cycles, & without concern for the implications for people fleeing their burning homes
/9 Turkey is using Syrian armed groups on the ground to spearhead its offensive. These groups are now referred to as ‘Turkish proxies’. They were previously called ‘Syrian rebels against Assad’. And for some time they were funded by the US and Qatar.
/9 And those states that raise their concern about this act of betrayal from the US and mumble something about the need for restraint from Turkey are in many cases complicit.
/9 Turkey is acting, at a minimum, to weaken the Kurds through the creation of a militarized buffer zone, out of which they have displaced 150,000 people in the past 2days, and into which they will be able to dump Syrian #refugees no longer wanted in Turkey.
/8 The #EU and its member states can act appalled, but they continue to pour money into Turkey (through the #EUturkeydeal ) to keep those very same refugees from reaching #Greece.
/9 Meanwhile, some families are being violently displaced for the third time in the space of 8 years...

The endless wars (that Trump claims to be ending) rumble on while US troops are sent to reinforce #SaudiArabia in an escalating showdown with #Iran
/9 Is this a betrayal or is everyone just not bothering to mask their real intentions this time around? After all, #nationalist self-interest is all the rage and let’s be honest, the US and EU don’t have a track record of being trustworthy friends.
