#DeleteFacebook, I guess. (Not that Twitter is a paragon of responsibility, itself.)
We've seen entities "too big to fail." What if FB is "too hard to leave?" I have friends that really want to do the same but feel trapped, with FB being the prominent mode of communication/connection they have with people.
Email is too formal, not everybody texts (thinking of my mother, for example), Twitter is too ephemeral for many, other platforms are too big of an ask to move to en masse, and people have a lot of history, memories, etc on FB they'd "lose."
What's the old saying about being in a job? "You don't have to be great, you just have to be irreplaceable" or some such. I think that's what FB has done and fighting against that, actively taking a stand, requires a good deal of sacrifice in some ways.
I'm just as much of a junkie for likes and comments as the next person (just did a @newprofcast episode on exactly that), so yeah, it'll be hard. There's a practical level of withdrawal in a very real way. I mean, I LIKE it when I get 30 reactions to a silly meme. It feels good.
@newprofcast But that's not worth it. Not anymore. (Insert my obligatory begging for @KeybaseIO to create the social network we need.)
@newprofcast @KeybaseIO So, uh, /thread? Not sure how to Twitter, only been here for 12 years. 🙄
@newprofcast @KeybaseIO Addendum: I'd like to think I have this level of commitment but probably don't. A fantastic step-by-step on how to leave without losing too much:
Bonus, @AmeliaMN is using R to do it. 🤘
Starting back up my "Read, Watch, Woof" #newsletter. Goes out on @newprofcast off-weeks (like this one). It's a bit of news/writing, a video I think is share-worthy, and a picture of one of our dogs. Expect one tomorrow. tinyletter.com/ryanstraight
