#AyodhyaHearing
As the Supreme Court will give its verdict today in the Babri Masjid case, here's a detailed account on how the Masjid was demolished illegally, the violence that followed & how the cuplrits enjoyed wide acceptance from the Hindus. Thread:
The Babri Masjid at #Ayodhya had been a bone of contention between the Hindus and Muslims for decades. For Hindus, the Masjid was reputed to be built at the birthplace of Ram, and hence a sacred site.
The issue had been dormant until the 1980s when a series of events brought it back in prominence. As a result, Hindu Sangh Parivar, which comprises of the RSS, VHP & the BJP, among others, decreed that the Masjid should be razed and a Mandir built in its place.
In 1984, Bajrang Dal, the youth wing of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad or VHP was formed with the stated intention of recruiting men for militant action to establish a Hindu nation, and for the construction of Ram Mandir. International conferences were organized and funds poured in.
In 1986, a court ruled that the doors of the Babri Masjid be opened and Puja permitted inside the structure. Muslims were *forbidden* from offering prayers. Neither the central (Congress, Rajiv Gandhi was the PM) nor the state (Congress) government questioned the decision.
But, this did not satisfy the Sangh Parivar who called upon the government to transfer the property rights of the Ayodhya site so that the biggest temple in the world could be built there. Ram Janmabhooomi (birthplace) became a symbol of militant Hindu nationalism.
In 1990, LK Advani of the BJP launched a Rath Yatra from Somnath. A group of young men there offered Advani a cup of blood. During September & October 1990, Advani traveled 10,000 KMs across India, expounding on the need for militant Hinduism & leaving communal riots in his wake.
On 30 Oct 1990, members of the RSS stormed the Babri Masjid and raised a saffron flag above it. 50 died in police firing. In Nov 1992, Advani said "BJP is committed to constructing the temple. Court wrangling can delay & New Delhi can obstruct, but no one can deny permanently."
Over the course of time till 06 Dec 1992, many BJP, VHP & RSS leaders gave inflammatory, hate speeches instigating violence against Muslims & provoking Hindus to demolish the Babri Masjid. Vajpayee's infamous words were "Zameen ko samtal karna hoga" & later he became the PM.
On 6 Dec 1992, the Babri Masjid was demolished by the Kar Sevaks illegally. This shattered the secular fabric of India. The government was not prepared for such a large scale attack or maybe, that was the silent nod for Masjid demolition. After all, Hindu votes were at stake.
As the news of Babri Masjid demolition spread, riots began all over the country. The worst incidents took place in Bombay, Ahmedabad, Banaras and Jaipur. There was widespread violence in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Bidar, and Gulbarga.
Bombay witnessed 2 spells of rioting, from 06 Dec to 12 Dec in 1992 and 7 Jan to 13 Jan in 1993. According to Srikrishna Commission Report, 900 people died and nearly 2100 injured in these riots. The loss to property was incalculable. Some 50,000 people were rendered homeless.
Everyday there were reports of Muslim men being butchered and women gang-raped. There was bloodbath everywhere. Shiv Sena, BJP, VHP, RSS & BD were the perpetrators of such a large scale pogrom. None from these organizations were punished by the law or abandoned by the Hindus.
On the contrary, the leaders from these militant organizations and political parties went on to become Hindu heroes. They were elected to the PM's office with vast majority. Those who died received state funerals. No repercussions for their crimes. None whatsoever!
This is when the Muslims lost their faith completely in the Indian constitution, judiciary, the government & to a larger extent in Hindus as well since they accepted and elected the ones that carried out such gruesome atrocities against Muslims.
Edit: As many have pointed out, the Supreme Court has concluded the hearings today in the Babri Masjid case. SC is expected to announce a verdict before CJI Ranjan Gogoi leaves office on November 17. Ignore the error. Thanks.
