Discussing women's rights and sex-based oppression has been declared illegal, in Canada.
As a historian (an actual one, not Wikipedia and social media based research) I can confirm that this is bollocks.
It is a much more intricate problem. Yes BAME women, like many working class women, have been written out of Suffragette history. This focus on leaders and martyrs, in my opinion, is to make the Suffragettes seem exceptional rather than ordinary. To stop the message that you can
achieve women's liberation too.
Emmeline attended abolitionist meetings as a child with her mother Sofia. The leader of the Suffragettes grew up in an abolitionist household and fought for BAME women, it is this right there at the top of the suffrage movement.
More importantly there were BAME Suffragettes, here is an article on them by historian Elizabeth Crawford bbc.co.uk/news/in-pictur…
However like all movements there would have been Racism. Yet this notion that the Suffragettes only faught for some women is wrong. It is the members of the Fawcett Society who only wanted landed middle class women to have the vote as a compromise with men. They decried the
Suffragettes.
The ill-informed sexist also argues that black women are just like men. If black women can be considered women then so can males. I find this racism abhorrent.
