My piece for @caltechletters about our work @Caltech on the #Ridgecrest #earthquakes, led by @zach_ and with @eric_fielding and many others. The paper was just published in @sciencemagazine; here I talk about what we found, how we found it, and why it matters. (1/n)
(2/n) Some of the key takeaways: these were complex earthquakes, breaking through more than 20 faults, many of which were previously unmapped. Modern data and methods meant we could observe the earthquakes in unprecedented detail.
(3/n) Earthquakes like this mean real difficulty for determining the hazards that faults pose, because finding all the faults and knowing which path the rupture will take is impossible.
(4/n) The earthquakes gave the Garlock fault a kick, causing around an inch of slow motion on the fault, known as creep. One of my main contributions to the paper, along with @Eric_fielding, was to pin down where and how much the Garlock moved. We used awesome data like this!
(5/n) We haven’t seen the Garlock moving like this before. We know the fault can cause large earthquakes, but what our results mean for future earthquakes is unclear.
(6/n) Great to see this getting covered by @ronlin for the @LATimes as well as @CBSLA and @Axios among others latimes.com/california/sto… losangeles.cbslocal.com/2019/10/17/ear… axios.com/garlock-califo…
(7/n) You can find our paper here science.sciencemag.org/content/366/64…. Please reach out if you have questions!
(8/n) The next #earthquake is only a matter of time, and now is a great time to get prepared! Check out earthquakecountry.org to find out more #ShakeOut
Our work on the Garlock fault made it onto the front page of the @latimes this morning!
One thing to be clear on is that while creep on the Garlock fault is interesting, it's implications for future earthquakes isn't clear. As always, don't be alarmed, be prepared!
@DrLucyJones @SeismoSue To everyone worried about the Garlock fault I want to be completely clear. Just because there's creep, doesn't mean there will be an earthquake. Earthquakes can happen at any time in California, and we all need to be prepared! Visit earthquakecountry.org for more info.
