The attitude towards #Autism has seemed to be, for a long time, that it's like a layer of graffiti on top of and ruining an otherwise perfect painting. An addition that detracts and mars. /1
Underneath the layer of graffiti is a perfect picture, or a fully formed person who has been 'spoiled' by this alien and additional layer. #autism is often viewed in this way, I find. /2
But I have a thought that #autism isn't a surface layer added to an otherwise whole piece. I reckon #autism is more like a base coat - the first layer of paint upon which everything else is painted. /3
I think it is at the core and centre of our #autistic selves - it's what the rest of our personality and existence is built on top of. The ramifications of this are broad. /4
In the graffiti analogy the #autism is a secondary affliction affecting every aspect of the painting. It spoils the whole scene, but also affects and ruins specific elements - a tree here, a hill there, a figure there. /5
So with this mindset, #autism afflicts and spoils each aspect of our personality in some way. Everything that makes us, us, is ruined by this superfluous layer of crap. But I don't think it works like this. /6
If #autism is the base coat, the core, then everything that makes us, us, is built snx drawn upon it. It affects, yes, but in a more natural, effective way. It adds a tint or texture to our personalities much like a base coat does for a painting. /7
It means all of our #autistic traits are a result of our #autism, a natural presentation of it, as its at our core, its who we are. I guess this is what's behind a preference for "autistic person" - were not a person that has had autism done to us - we're people made of autism. 8
This would mean that we can no more remove #autism from a person as we can remove the base coat of a painting - it's impossible, misguided and foolish an endeavour. /9
So yeah, just a thought I had earlier at the photocopier. /10
