Delighted to be attending #NECE2019 joining colleagues across Europe to explore the role of #citizenshipeducation in confronting inequalities
Listening to @lokiscottishrap "I went to a school where we were taught to do what was necessary to get a job in a precarious economic environment, and to be grateful for it" #NECE2019
Now addressing Q about honesty. Is it more honest for educators to teach about wealth & inequality? Answering with insight: ppl from bottom of economic ladder are well versed in middle-class sensibilities due to contact with professionals. Middle classes struggle with that divide
Now on to individual/collective approaches to empowerment. Both needed. Middle-class lefties talk about structural problems in exclusive terms. Individual choices matter too. Heroin addicts need to make a choice to stop, regardless of services available @lokiscottishrap #NECE2019
Cross-pollinating people, creating solidarity across social divisions, walking alongside people, not being scared or put off by how people dress or speak, challenging social mobility narrative... important suggestions being made
Role of education and achievement of #socialjustice - 'it would be very unusual for education systems to teach people how to overthrow society' @lokiscottishrap #NECE2019 droll statement but a key dilemma for educators, who are both in and against the state
Darren ended with a reminder of historic role of physical violence in schools - not been so long since corporal punishment was legal - yes ok but let's not forget the human rights defenders who campaigned for that change. Rarely gets articulated... #NECE2019
Now @AnjaNeundorf looking at citizenship education and level of democracy across Europe. Inequality of voices leads to inequality of policy output. People from socially deprived backgrounds tend not to be heard or represented in politics #NECE2019
This feeds back and leads to apathy, resentment, leading to more inequality of voices. People become active in politics due to knowledge and motivation. Civic education can compensate for lack of parental socialisation into political engagement @AnjaNeundorf #NECE2019
We need to break the cycle of schools perpetuating inequality. Compulsory civic education, quality teacher training, lifelong learning and technology. Can social media be the solution? #NECE2019
Key messages from @AnjaNeundorf #NECE2019
Fabulous input during Q&A from @FelisaTibbitts 👏👏 too much to tweet! #NECE2019
Up (very) early to get to day 2 of #NECE2019 🏍️ key issue for me reflecting on inputs yesterday from @lokiscottishrap @AnjaNeundorf @FelisaTibbitts & others is about the education system itself recreating inequalities in various ways, such as...
... Representation (@AnjaNeundorf) failing to achieve democratic, inclusive, equitable representation of voices from all sections of society. Most people have powerful political views but can get 'worn out by politics', to quote Berlant. The myth of 'hard to reach' parents.
... Recognition and Respect (@lokiscottishrap) Failing to recognise the aspirations, frustrations, struggles, lives, cultures, abilities and strengths of working-class families. Brewdog-supping hipster hypocrisy.
... Redistribution (@FelisaTibbitts) redistribution of rights and resources. Failing to meet the radical challenge of justice-oriented citizenship ('asking why people are hungry', to quote @joelwestheimer), the urgent need to become human rights defenders #NECE2019
... Hope (many speakers and delegates mentioned this) the need to remain hopeful and to doggedly pursue the challenges above. 'Growing roses in concrete', to quote Duncan-Andrade. Helsinki Bus Station Theory: stay on the f***ing bus. Looking forward to day 2 😉 #NECE2019
Looking forward to 'Citizenship Education for a Divided Nation' at #NECE2019 with @BryonyHoskins @DanielaSime & David Kerr from @YoungCitizensUK examining the promotion of #BritishValues in the English curriculum
David Kerr summarising approaches to citizenship education (CE) across UK. Emphasis on CE has dropped down the educational and political agenda since 2010. Need to ask why this is. Economy? Globalisation? Populism? Should we reframe CE to suit current political context? #NECE2019
Now @BryonyHoskins introducing her book palgrave.com/gp/book/978113… Study of participatory citizenship and knowledge acquisition. Generally, middle class students take up more participatory opportunities. Lack of access to participatory citizenship is increasing inequality #NECE2019
@BryonyHoskins saying that developing critical, active citizenship is required, not simply expecting students to acquiesce and accept a form of citizenship defined by attenuated economic roles #NECE2019
Now listening to @DanielaSime talking about the @MigrantYouth project
Identity formation constant process in flux, currently being shaped by Brexit 'rupture', neoliberalism, precarious employment @DanielaSime #NECE2019
Citizenship seen in holistic way as an embodied category, a view that foregrounds lived experience of citizenship @DanielaSime
Brexit and current political context has increased feelings of 'unbelonging' among young people, and there are increasing experiences of racism. Citizenship education has a key role in creating social cohesion @DanielaSime #NECE2019
A real privilege to listen to Kathleen Lynch today during #NECE2019 talking about affective equality, gender and intersectionality of injustices 👇
Now hearing from @FelisaTibbitts on the theme of Global Citizenship Education and how this has been developed through the work of @UNESCO #NECE2019
National loyalty and global citizenship can co-exist - there is no (or shouldn't be) fundamental conflict between the two @FelisaTibbitts #NECE2019
Now hearing from a panel session 'European Citizenship beyond Brexit: an agenda for Times of Trouble' #NECE2019 live feed here 👇
Neoliberalism has deskilled us as citizens. Brexit shd be understood as an English vote, a reaction against feminism and multiculturalism, a consequence of elite liberalism. Pedagogical consequences of Brexit incl recognition of British colonialism @AdamRamsay #NECE2019
Young people will/have become disillusioned with democracy due to sharp differences between policy discourses and the realities of subsequent political actions. We need active democratic citizenship to challenge this #NECE2019 (Katerina Toura, Council of Europe)
Q for panel, is there a blurry line between active citizenship and civil disobedience? @AdamRamsay says activism only effective when challenging power. Trend is for use of violence by police. @EveVHepburn saying that behaviour of politicians and adults needs addressed #NECE2019
@EveVHepburn ending on an optimistic note that Brexit has had a positive impact on European identity and ability to come to negotiating consensus, so EU will strengthen as a result, hopefully with Scotland in EU too! 👍 #NECE2019
Ok that's the last #NECE2019 tweet from me. It has been a wonderful few days, I've met great, inspiring people and made new friends and colleagues. Thanks to @NECE_Network for organising! 👏👏👏
