First up at #MozFest is @szymielewicz a lawyer specialising in human rights and technology for a talk on data and exploitation Image
@szymielewicz "Our data is used as a tool of power against us,” @szymielewicz says. #MozFest
@szymielewicz Szymielewicz says she is not a fan of breaking up big tech companies like FB, Google etc. Instead she envisions building something new ;emerging the existing platforms and stores of data, building something more humane, something of more value to us. #MozFest
Now talking algorithms is former YouTube engineer @gchaslot and directors of AI Ethics Lab @ccansu Image
Speaking about product managers trying to fix the algorithmic issues at YouTube, @gchaslot says: "It’s not that they fail to solve the problem, it’s that they don’t even try.” #MozFest
@gchaslot How do you make AI more fair? “We need much more transparency," @gchaslot says. @ccansu says ethical problem solving should be made part of the development right from the beginning. #Mozfest19
Just bought some Kombucha from a robot called SAM....even got s receipt #MozFest ImageImageImage
Lots of interesting things to see at Mozfest ImageImageImageImage
Next up is @cward1e and @camillefrancois talking about the future of disinformation. Image
Which is the worst platform for disinformation? @camillefrancois says VK, the Russian version of Facebook. @cward1e says its YouTube #MozFest
@camillefrancois @cward1e "There are lots of YouTubes that we don’t spend time in, and it’s very difficult to monitor. They are getting away with murder,” @cward1e says of Alphabet #MozFest
@cward1e says she was brought in to talk to ABC about the threat from deepfakes during 2020 election a couple of weeks ago. She told them the bigger threat was them posting footage of one thing and labelling it as something else. Then this happened: snopes.com/fact-check/abc…
Rather than worrying about deepfakes, we should be much more worried about fake audio and fake text according to Wardle and Francois #MozFest
Wardle: “There is no way they can stand over it” regarding Facebook’s policy over false political ads #MozFest
"I wish all polices would say they are not taking political advertising.” Wardle #MozFest
What never gets talked about in relation to disinformation? “A lot of the troll campaigns use private messaging and emails to target journalists and activists. It was much more insidious campaign where journalists were fed material. That’s a hell of a blindspot.” @camillefrancois
Disinformation is a very complex issue with different issues that have different solutions. “We shouldn’t have disinformation panels any more.” @camillefrancois

In the space 24 hours, a false story about Volodymr Zelensky's wife buying a $5M Bugatti Tourbillon spread at warp speed across the internet from from an unknown AI-powered French website to the top search result of Google

Here's how it happened

wired.com/story/ai-gener…
On July 1, the website Vérité Cachée published an article headed: “Olena Zelenska became the first owner of the all-new Bugatti Tourbillon.”

The claim was backed up by video testimony from a "whistleblower" and documents.

It was all fake.

US domestic extremists, including neo-Nazis, have been using AI for years, but new research shows that in 2024, their adoption of the technology has accelerated dramatically—and experts are deeply concerned.

1/6

wired.com/story/neo-nazi…
Extremists, initially skeptical about "the evils" of generative AI tools like ChatGPT, have changed their minds.

“In the last few years we’ve gone from seeing occasional AI content to AI being a significant portion of hateful propaganda content online" @MEMRIReports

2/6
A new trend this years is the adoption of gen AI video tools like OpenAI's Sora, with researchers seeing a marked increased in AI video featuring hate content in recent months — including a video of actress Emma Watson reading Mein Kampf aloud while wearing a Nazi uniform

As Trump and the GOP continue to push voter fraud conspiracies ahead of the US elections, experts are seeing a resurgence in far-right paramilitary activism.

Now, a January 6th prisoner is trying to launch a 50-state armed militia from his jail cell.

wired.com/story/january-…
Jake Lang, caught on video swinging a bat at police during the Capitol riot, has been in jail for 3yrs.

“It's important to recognize that Lang is, first and foremost, a grifter who knows that his ‘political prisoner’ schtick is his only shot at relevance,” @Jon_Lewis27 says

2/7
From his jail cell in Brooklyn, Lang told me he's been working on his new militia, called the North American Patriot and Liberty Militia (or NAPALM for short), for a year.

For the last month I've been attending online webinars from election denial groups who are ramping up their efforts to try and disrupt the 2024 presidential election.

Here's what I found out:

(with typically wonderful art from @AnjaliNair25)

wired.com/story/election…
True the Vote and founder Catherine Engelbrecht have been trying to disenfranchise voters for more than a decade, but as the November elections rolls around they are now looking to recruit thousands of local activists to challenge voter rolls and disrupt election locations

2/7
In a series of webinars, Engelbrecht has been giving supporters a how-to guide to local organization as well as an introduction to the group's new IV3 tool, which automates voter registration challenges.

Russia's media is this morning celebrating a huge victory thanks to #TuckerCarlson's softball interview with Putin last night.

Here's how the Kremlin-backed outlets, as well as Telegram channels, and bot networks are spinning the encounter.

1/6

wired.com/story/tucker-c…
The homepages of all Russian media are dominated by stories about the interview. State-run news agency RIA Novosti's newsfeed had at least a dozen stories published since last night — focusing on how Putin had succeeded in "educating" the west about Russia/Ukraine history

2/6 Image
Memes about Carlson flooded pro-Kremlin Telegram channels, including ones calling for a national day of celebration for Tucker and images of him wearing a ushanka hat.
