@szymielewicz Szymielewicz says she is not a fan of breaking up big tech companies like FB, Google etc. Instead she envisions building something new ;emerging the existing platforms and stores of data, building something more humane, something of more value to us. #MozFest
Now talking algorithms is former YouTube engineer @gchaslot and directors of AI Ethics Lab @ccansu
Speaking about product managers trying to fix the algorithmic issues at YouTube, @gchaslot says: "It’s not that they fail to solve the problem, it’s that they don’t even try.” #MozFest
@gchaslot How do you make AI more fair? “We need much more transparency," @gchaslot says. @ccansu says ethical problem solving should be made part of the development right from the beginning. #Mozfest19
Just bought some Kombucha from a robot called SAM....even got s receipt #MozFest
Which is the worst platform for disinformation? @camillefrancois says VK, the Russian version of Facebook. @cward1e says its YouTube #MozFest
@camillefrancois@cward1e "There are lots of YouTubes that we don’t spend time in, and it’s very difficult to monitor. They are getting away with murder,” @cward1e says of Alphabet #MozFest
@cward1e says she was brought in to talk to ABC about the threat from deepfakes during 2020 election a couple of weeks ago. She told them the bigger threat was them posting footage of one thing and labelling it as something else. Then this happened: snopes.com/fact-check/abc…
Rather than worrying about deepfakes, we should be much more worried about fake audio and fake text according to Wardle and Francois #MozFest
Wardle: “There is no way they can stand over it” regarding Facebook’s policy over false political ads #MozFest
"I wish all polices would say they are not taking political advertising.” Wardle #MozFest
What never gets talked about in relation to disinformation? “A lot of the troll campaigns use private messaging and emails to target journalists and activists. It was much more insidious campaign where journalists were fed material. That’s a hell of a blindspot.” @camillefrancois
Disinformation is a very complex issue with different issues that have different solutions. “We shouldn’t have disinformation panels any more.” @camillefrancois

For the last month I've been attending online webinars from election denial groups who are ramping up their efforts to try and disrupt the 2024 presidential election.
True the Vote and founder Catherine Engelbrecht have been trying to disenfranchise voters for more than a decade, but as the November elections rolls around they are now looking to recruit thousands of local activists to challenge voter rolls and disrupt election locations
2/7
In a series of webinars, Engelbrecht has been giving supporters a how-to guide to local organization as well as an introduction to the group's new IV3 tool, which automates voter registration challenges.
The homepages of all Russian media are dominated by stories about the interview. State-run news agency RIA Novosti's newsfeed had at least a dozen stories published since last night — focusing on how Putin had succeeded in "educating" the west about Russia/Ukraine history

Memes about Carlson flooded pro-Kremlin Telegram channels, including ones calling for a national day of celebration for Tucker and images of him wearing a ushanka hat.
Going to be monitoring the #takeourborderback convoy here today, watching numerous livestreamers who are in Viriginia broascasting from the convoy as it gets ready to depart for Texas
And this morning, one of the livestreamers posted a picture claiming that four cars which had their types slashed in the parking lot of the hotel where convoyers were staying
The #TakeBackOurBorder convoy is spearheaded by Pete Chambers who claims to be a former green beret and plans to deploy tactics used fighting ISIS in Syria against migrants crossing the border.
Here he is on Alex Jones talking about deploying a "domestic internal defense"
2/5
The convoy will begin Monday from Virginia, moving through Florida and Louisiana before ending up in Eagle Pass, Texas, where the standoff is taking place.
En route, the convoy will stop off at a brewery owned by Phil Waldron, who was central to fomenting #Jan6th
How did Bannon and Carlson, two of the biggest MAGA influencers, end up boosting a conspiracy that Ireland's government is replacing its population with "people from the third world"?
The answer is Keith Woods (a Roscommon native whose real name is Keith O'Brien)
A 🧵...
Woods, who has blocked me, was a student at NUIG where he studied philosophy.
He can be seen in this picture (back row, 3rd from left) which was taken at an intervarsity debating competition where Woods (or O'Brien as he's referred to in the caption) came 2nd.
In recent years however Woods has become most famous as the pseudo-intellectual voice of the Irish far-right.
With accounts on Twitter and Telegram he built up a sizeable following though until recently, Woods did not like to get his hands dirty with real world protests.
Irish Garda Commissioner Drew Harris this morning said that there's no way when the stabbing happened they "could have anticipated" the #DublinRiots
It was the first thing I expected when I heard about the stabbing.
Anyone paying attention knew this was coming.
A short 🧵
Last year, @globalextremism warned that white nationalist, anti-LGBTQ+, anti-immigrant and anti-lockdown groups in Ireland “seem to be coming together and echoing each other’s hateful rhetoric."
The report was largely ignored with one Irish journalist calling it "disinformation"
Over the course of the last year the real-world activities of far-right figures have ratcheted up, most recently seen in the attacks on libraries where dangerous idiots threaten library staff and defame them as pedophiles and groomers.
