Thoughts on candidate statements after reading so, so many... curious as to others thoughts. #scholarships #phd #msc
State your career goal clearly at the start. Don’t make reviewers hunt for it, or worse, not mention it at all.
Put your past in that context, steps towards that goal, your journey so far. Including bumps in the road with context of course. Everybody has bumps. Own them.
State why this opportunity is best for you and your goal. Start with the idea for your project. How does it serve as a launching pad for you?
Why these people? Talk about your PI and key collaborators and their standing in the field. If you use metrics (ugh!) do so in the context of field. Reviewer might not know the context.
Talk about how the PI delivers for trainees, do they reach their goals? Talk about the peers in the lab and how they shine themselves and can support you.
Talk about the lab, department/institute, university resources that support your development.
Finally, talk about the impact this will have on your training, the impact your work will have on the field (don’t oversell!), and how you fit with the stated goals of the funder. End making them see you are a fit for them.
