#THREAD | The Biography of Ayat. Sayed Ja'far Murtadha al-'Āmili
Family.. He is Sayed Ja'far, the son of Sayed Mustafa Murtadha. His family is a respected family, from which there are many scholars whose biographies were documented, such as Sayed Haidar and Sayed Jawād, who were prominent scholars during their time.
Upbringing.. Ayat. Sayed Ja'far Murtadha was born in 1945 in Ra's al-'Ayn, South Lebanon, before moving to their current village, Aita. There were no conventional schools where the Sayed was raised, but there was a small room where a teacher schooled about 20 children.
The Sayed did not last 2 months there because his father was against the book they were being taught (it praised Mu'āwiyah). The entire village rejected such schooling. So, his father began teaching him himself. Sayed Ja'far says, "My father really cared for my education."
Sayed Mustafa taught Sayed Ja'far to read Qur'an at 4 years old. He would give him novels, history and literature books, etc. and Sayed Ja'far would read them and write his father reports on what he read. Sayed Ja'far says, "He would tell me he would send me to Najaf to learn."
The Sayed was only 10 years old when he learned to write Arabic poetry. When he was 15 years old, his father said to him, "I want you to be a scholar - not a poet." Sayed Ja'far mentions in an interview that his first real teacher was his father, may God have mercy on them both.
Moving to Najaf.. Sayed Ja'far left to Najaf in 1962. He was 17 years old and knew no one there. He lived at Borujerdi School for over a year before later entering the religious seminary, getting married and renting an independent home. He stayed there for about 6 years.
Moving to Qom.. Sayed Mustafa wanted Sayed Ja'far to move to Qom, so Sayed Ja'far did an istikhāra and it turned out that he should indeed go there. He went to Qom and studied there for about 27 years. He also built strong relationships with the leadership and other marāje'.
Teachers.. Among his best teachers in Najaf were Ayat. Sheikh Muhammad Taqi al-Jawāhiri and Ayat. Sayed Abdul-Sā'hib al-'Hakeem, who he says was a great teacher. In Qom, he studied under Grand Ayat. Sayed Ali al-Fāni, current marja' Grand Ayat. Sayed Mūsa al-Zanjāni, and others.
Reputation.. The Sayed has numerous testimonies to his ijtihād, which he humbly does not like to mention. Also, renowned historian Ayat. Sheikh al-Qureshi describes Sayed Ja'far as "the genius of the era". Ayat. Sayed al-'Askari says, "I do not know an investigator like him."
Works.. Ayat. Sayed Ja'far Murtadha wrote some of the most vital Shi'a texts, many of which on sensitive topics and points of intersection. He has over 100 powerful works, about 70 of which have been published. Many were lost and destroyed in war as Israel would target his home.
This shows the Sayed's knowledge and sincerity. He says, "My favorite book is that which people benefit from the most. I write to satisfy people's needs - not just to write. Writing would be rather useless if it did not remove misconceptions, guide people to the right path, etc."
Sayed Ja'far says, "Generally, our best books are the 35-volume Sahih of the Biography of Prophet Muhammad (s), the 53-volume Sahih of the Biography of Imam Ali (a), The Political Life of Imam Ali al-Ridha (a) and Ma'sāt al-Zahraa (a)."
Political orientation.. I asked Sayed Ja'far about some Shi'a being politically suspicious and distant from the common Shi'a political direction. He said it is disappointing, but there always were those who were politically suspicious and connected with Western governments.
Defense of Shi'a Islam.. One of the things Sayed Ja'far was most known for was his defense of Ahl al-Bayt (a) and specifically Sayeda Zahraa (a). After some scholars expressed many opinions that were against the Qur'an, our texts and orthodox Shi'ism, Sayed Ja'far took a stance.
Although there were many such cases, I mean a particular stance in which the Sayed replied - with the aforementioned Ma'sāt al-Zahraa (a) - to a Shi'a scholar who denied her (a) murder and some of the events that came with it. Sayed also refuted the scholar's theological claims.
There is much more that can be said about the legacy of Ayat. Sayed Ja'far Murtadha - his political role, his scholastic contributions, his beautiful ethics, etc. Prophet Muhammad (s) says, "One who dies a lover of Ahl al-Bayt (a) dies a martyr."

May God have mercy on his soul.
