Though the salary ranges here are accurate, there are many things off about this article.

For instance, Berlin just passed a five year rent ceiling. 20€/sqm is absurd unless you insist on living in gentrifying neubau in Kreuzberg or similar.
There are a lot of unsolved issues with Berlin’s housing scenario but describing it as “sharply rising with no end in sight” is more than a bit hyperbolic for a city that’s taking the most aggressive rent control stance of any of its peers.
Here’s a comparison for those taking notes:

Before I moved to Berlin, I made $120,000/year with ~25% bonus. My wife and I paid a mortgage on a house. I had a car, car insurance, etc.
Moving to Berlin, my wife and I are for now living separately, which means we pay two separate housing costs. I no longer pay for a car, but my transit expenses (~61€/mo) are roughly what i paid for car insurance.

I took a small paycut in salary owing to a grade increase.
But even with nearly doubling our housing costs, I am still saving and spending far less money than before and accruing no new debt.

I pay just over 13€/sqm monthly for a nice flat. I can commute anywhere i need to get in the city in 45 mins.
That 13€/sqm, by the by, is absurdly expensive and likely illegal.
While the bay still comes out way ahead, the comparison to pretty much anywhere else in America tips the scales far in favor of Berlin. Also, it’s entirely possible to spend a day here and not run into a single other tech person, which is a fucking godsend sometimes.
I pay *way* more in taxes, and 8% of my gross salary goes to healthcare (far more than before).

Still, i come out ahead.
With my skills and experience, if I wanted to, I know I could demand a numbet starting with at least a 3 or a 4 in the Bay.

I don’t think I’ll be doing that.
28 days paid leave. Unlimited sick time. Healthcare. Easy access to culture, history, and travel. Car free living.
