THREAD: "Nothing stops a bullet like a job"

Currently a smear is circulating: @kamalaharris is out of touch because she said this during the @BenedictEDU #CriminalJusticeForum

Actually, this reference shows how IN TOUCH she is, and how little people know about reform. 1/
If you follow reentry/rehabilitation programs, this phrase will sound familiar to you.

"Nothing stops a bullet like a job" is a quote from @HomeboyInd 's founder Father Greg Boyle.

Homeboy is a pioneer: the country's largest rehabilitation center / intervention program 2/
Here's a news clip discussing the program.

At :30 secs you'll hear: "nothing stops a bullet like a job".

In 1992 when @HomeboyInd started Father Boyle's community had the highest concentration of gang violence in the US. 3/

.@HomeboyInd offers variety of free programs: counseling, legal services, tattoo removal, education, work training, and employment services.. including running cafes, bakeries, and production of grocery items. /4

1999 article: "The current police log shows that there are 61,406 members in LA's 409 gangs; the most common form of death for teenagers in the city is homicide"

Fr. Boyle saw the connection between gang activity and young men getting shot/killed 5/

Fr. Boyle worked with the community so closely that they nicknamed him "G-Dog"

"Nothing stops a bullet like a job" was a succinct message to explain to outsiders how job creation and education could prevent gun/gang violence and end the cycle of mass incarceration. 6/
Initially, Father Boyle was accused of glorifying gangs and harboring criminals.

If you want to be inspired by Father Boyle's sincerity. Here's a Ted Talk of him discussing how much his community has taught him (fellow white ppl esp, watch this) 7/
If there's any doubt @KamalaHarris was thinking of Father Boyle when she said: "Nothing stops a bullet like a job"

Homeboy Industries helped with the Back on Track Program.

See article from Vogue: vogue.com/article/kamala… . 8/
Check out the map below: over 250 organizations were inspired by @HomeboyInd and joined the Homeboy Network with programs in their communities. homeboyindustries.org

@KamalaHarris is NOT new to this. She knows who is putting in work, what works, and how to get the job done. 9/
Last tweet: Kamala's #CriminalJusticeReform includes this model: kamalaharris.org/criminal-justi…

Last tweet. Here is a recent video from @HomeboyInd detailing their program.

MUST WATCH: see the impact of jobs/investment:

@HomeboyInd BONUS TWEET.

Here's the original clip before it was spliced.

Kamala was talking about an intersectional approach to reform, not simply police brutality. People are acting in bad faith out here, and it just doesn't hold because Kamala is a trail blazer

@HomeboyInd To clarify further. The question asked was: what would she do in the first 100 days for criminal justice reform - "making sure people have an opportunity for a fresh start at life"

(Thanks @plpolitics for the link)

.
@HomeboyInd @plpolitics Someone mentioned that @HomeboyInd changed their motto more recently.

True; they evolved their pitch to reflect that their mission is more holistic: hope, training (jobs), and support.

Kamala also talks extensively about the same approach in her plan:
