There is some much to unpack here, I don't even know where to begin:

@LDSdiscussions @McconneyMichael

First thoughts: #LDS church is spending a lot of resources on keeping members from questioning its narrative & on casting those who do in a poor light.
I found it particularly interesting how they stigmatize reading or listening to 'exodus stories' of people who leave the church. This are clearly a concern for the brethren. This specifically targets @mormonstories, @wardlesspodcast, etc, and asking loved ones why they left.
If you listen to those 'exit stories,' you will quickly learn that many who leave did everything they could think of to maintain their belief. They did not want to lose their faith in the #Mormon truth claims and tried their hardest to save their testimonies.
But this video implies that those who leave did so because they wanted to NOT believe—that they were looking for an excuse to doubt and to deny the faith. This is intended to stigmatize those who doubt and have honest questions. It is intended to create fear and mistrust.
And notice how researching the truth claims is portrayed as 'temptation' and as an effort to reinforce one's doubts. This entire video is dripping with rhetoric intended to create a fear and mistrust of questioning the church's teachings or narrative. Stay in the correlated boat.
Lastly—because I'm sick of dwelling on this terrible video—there is the issue of 'choice.' By couching this video in the context of 'choosing to believe' it makes it easier to dismiss those who leave as those who 'choose not to believe.' This makes them easier to dismiss.
Inasmuch as 'choosing to believe' is a couched in the light of a choice between right and wrong, mastery and temptation, light and dark, or goodness and wickedness—then those who 'choose to doubt' are easy to dismiss as having some moral failing or being deceived.
The whole thing makes me 😱🤮🤬💔. It's disgusting and disheartening to see the church spend so much energy on producing content infused with this rhetoric, over and over and over.
